Just like any other day off, Nicole Haught walked the crowded and humid streets of a summer day in New York, taking in all the things that surrounded her. Just the hustle of the city could get her going, no coffee for her. Well, one other person, Waverly Earp, arms full of work papers and walking through the city, was in desperate need for coffee as this was the day she started her new job.
As soon as she got her coffee and headed out the shop, she had bumped into one particularly tall individual and spilled her coffee in the process.
"Oh shit!" "Oh fuck!" The two said in unison (and in pain) as the hot coffee spilled onto Nicole's shirt and Waverly's papers.
"Oh my gosh, I'm sorry!" Waverly had apologized. "I didn't watch where I was going and-"
"No No No, it was my fault. I wasn't paying attention." Nicole cut off in rebuttal.
"Your shirt... I ruined your shirt. Let me buy you a new one." Waverly said in attempt to better their current situation.
"But your papers... They're ruined. How can I help?" Nicole said in pity for the complete stranger.
"I bet it's fine. I'll make new copies at work. No big deal." Waverly had replied. But it was a big deal for her. I was the first day of her job. Brushing her nervousness aside, she picked up the wet papers and empty coffee cup and threw them into a trash can.
"At least let me buy you a new cup of co-WOAH" Nicole said, but before she could finish, Waverly had grabbed her by the arm and led her into a local clothing shop.
"Waverly Earp." She had said once they had entered the shop, sticking her hand out for Nicole to shake. Nicole heard that name before. "Earp". Not sure of her assumption, she brushed it aside.
"Nicole Haught." She said and smiled, taking Waverly's hand and shaking it.
"So, pick out a shirt and I'll pay." Waverly had said with a smile on her face, glad she could help out someone. "Only if I buy you a new cup of coffee." Nicole replied to make the situation even.
"Deal." Waverly agreed. Nicole then went off to look for the cheapest shirt there while Waverly watched, admiring her. Then she caught herself. She had just met this person. She barely knows anything about her. Just as she was done regathering herself, Nicole had found the shirt and brought it to Waverly for approval. Once they were at the register, Nicole spoke to strike up a conversation.
"So, what do you do for work?" She asked.
"Oh. Uh, I was just hired as an investigator at Precinct 24." Waverly answered.
"What are the odds?" Nicole laughed lightly. "I'm an officer at that exact precinct. Today's my day off." Nicole paused.
"What time do you have to be there by? We can call off the coffee if you're running late." Nicole said. Waverly looked at her watch as it read "7:41 AM".
"I've got until 9:00. Plenty of time." She said and smiled at Nicole. Waverly wanted to have coffee with this person. She wanted to know more about her. "Say, instead of you just buying me coffee, why don't we just have a cup together and talk a bit?" Waverly asked, hopeful that she would say yes. "I mean if you don't mind." Nicole said and smiled as Waverly finished paying and handed the shirt to Nicole.
"I'll just change and we'll head off." Nicole said as she headed to the dressing room. She quickly took off her stained T-Shirt to put on the new one. She folded the stained shirt and put it in the bag that once held her new shirt and headed out to find Waverly patiently waiting for her. The two headed out to the same coffee shop Waverly had been to 10 minutes ago.
