It was the first day of school and I was making my way to the office to get my schedule that I've already lost in the week I've had it before school started. Of course it had to start raining, because what else would happen to me, a good day? Wearing only jean shorts and a tee shirt I was beginning to freeze. My converse splashed in the puddles as I ran to the building, but before I could get there I slipped and fell, soaking myself. way to go, I thought sourly. I stayed on the ground, shocked and shivering, and almost missed a hand reaching down, offering to help me up.

I looked up, not recognizing the boy who stood in front of me, arm outstretched. I took his arm and he pulled me up from the wet ground. We stared at each other, not saying a word for a solid couple seconds.

Dark hair, brown eyes, pouty lips, he seemed perfect. He had to be new. If he's been here I definitely would have noticed. "Are you alright?" he asked breaking my stare. Looking down at myself, slightly embarrassed because of my soaking wet hair and clothes, I nodded. "Yeah I think so. Are you new? I don't think i've seen you around." I said without thinking. Great going, I thought, you're gonna scare him away.

The boy's eyes shifted to the space around me, not meeting my eyes. "Yeah, I'm new." he said.

I looked at him and smiled "Well, I'm Skylar. Nice to meet you...?" I trailed off, still not knowing his name.

"Calum." the boy said with no emotion.

"Calum." I repeated, smiling. There's a couple seconds of silence, and when I realize he isn't going to say anything else, I say, "Well, I'll see you around Calum."

I walked into the office still shivering, noticing that the boy, I mean Calum, had followed me in. I'm sure he'll be getting a tour, probably from someone else that's on the welcoming committee with me. I signed up for it last year, but there's a lot more Welcomers than Newcomers, so I doubt I'll have a kid to show around this year. Looking at the middle aged lady at the front desk, I smiled. "Skylar Thompson. I need my class schedule, please."

She looked at me over her computer, then clicks a couple times. "I have it printing. Also you're supposed to be giving a tour to..." she trailed off, looking through the names of the multiple new kids and freshman who were getting tours. "Calum Hood" she finished. Hearing his name I could see calum get up and walk over to us

"I don't need a tour. Can i just get my schedule?" He asked, a little angry with the thought of having a tour guide. The lady looked at him and said, "Of course, but your schedule is already the same as Skylar's so she'll be there if you need help getting around."

How is that even possible? Who would put our schedules as the exact same thing? I knew a kid a couple years ago who almost had every single class with me, but this is weird. At least with the kid a couple years ago we had one or two classes not with each other.

I looked at Calum to see him already looking at me. Feeling his eyes pierce through me, I looked away, my face flushing. "Alright, here are both of your schedules. Have a good day!" she chirped cheerfully. Before I could do anything Calum was already heading off to our first period with me trailing behind him. Who's supposed to be the tour guide here?

When we got to first period, Calum went in and sat at a seat in the very back corner, all alone. Looking at him and all the open seats I made a split second decision and went and sat beside him. He looked at me and opened his mouth but before he could say anything the teacher, Mrs. Willams, came in. "Welcome back to school! This is gonna be a great year!" she almost yelled. Calum looked away and laid his head down as if to say oh boy.

The next two classes consisted of seating charts and calum staring at me. After looking over to catch him staring again, I'm about ready to say something to him along the lines of "stop staring at me!!" but the bell rang causing him to look away.

I made my way to the cafeteria, glancing at the menu for lunch today. chicken sandwiches with corn and french fries. No thank you. I went ahead and sat down, looking at my phone instead of going through the line. I didn't have many friends so when everyone was finally through the line i looked around to see if i could find anyone to sit with. I only locked eyes with Calum instead. I got up to go sit with him since he was also sitting by himself. "Hi" I said quietly sitting down in front of him. He said nothing. "Can i sit here?"

He nodded. "So where'd you move from?" I asked wondering why anyone would want to move to Tennessee.

"Australia." he said making eye contact with me for the first time since I fell that morning. "Can I ask why you moved?" i wondered out loud. Noticing that he tensed up at the question, I quickly added, "It doesn't really matter. We don't have to talk about it." He looked down at the table then looked at me before getting up and walking out of the lunch room. I furrowed my eyebrows, confused to why he walked out but shrugged it off because the bell rang.

The rest of the day I slept through the school rules i'd heard for the past two years. Feeling a tap on my shoulder, I woke up to see everyone in the class gone except for calum who was looking at me "The bell rang, I thought I should wake you up." He said quietly, rushing his words out quickly.

"Yeah thanks," I groggily said, rubbing at my eyes. He was gone before I even stood up. Walking home, I listened to my music thinking about the day. Mostly Calum though. I walked up to my room plopping on my bed, I wondered why Calum was so reserved. I wanted to know what made him like that. I was determined to find out the secrets behind the new mysterious boy.
