Lilah was wandering around the Target, trying to find something cute to wear tonight. She was on this awkward cusp of being too old for the kid's section but too young for the juniors clothes. She searched the racks thoroughly.
Brendon and Zack entered the store. They needed a few tour necessities and still had a couple hours before sound check.
"Alright I'm going to the bath stuff," Brendon told Zack.
"I'll be with the office stuff," Zack said, "Meet you in the middle when we're done?"
"Yep," Brendon said as each of them took off.
Lilah was looking at a top that might work when her vision blurred. She quickly reached out for something to hold onto but ended up knocking half the rack onto the floor.
Brendon had made it to his aisle when he heard a loud clatter. He looked back and saw a girl stumbling. She suddenly fell to the floor with a thud.
"Oh my god!" one of the saleswomen exclaimed, immediately rushing over.
Five other people shopping stopped in shock and began to gather around the girl. Brendon couldn't see anything and he hung back, not wanting to get involved or crowd her.
"She's having a seizure!" one of the onlookers exclaimed.
Instantly, something shifted within Brendon. He jogged over to the group and slipped through the bystanders. Sure enough, the girl was on her back having a seizure.
"Is anyone with her?" He asked the gathering shoppers as he quickly knelt down and took over the situation, beginning a familiar routine. Everyone shook their heads. No one had any problem with him taking the lead. He read the saleswoman's name tag: Janice.
"Can you pass me that?" Brendon asked her, pointing to the sweater on the display table behind her. She quickly gave it to him and he slipped it under the girl's head. "I need you to help me put her on her side," He instructed.
Janice nodded and helped him roll her. Brendon then pulled out his phone and started a timer. Janice was untangling a purse from the girl's arms when she noticed her bracelet had a large red emblem on it–a medical alert bracelet.
"She has a bracelet," Janice pointed out. The bracelet stretched and she pulled it off of the girl's hand, giving it to Brendon. He saw that the back of the pendant read:
Lilah Wright
Epilepsy
Call (291) 555-0329"Could you call that number?" Brendon asked, "Oh, and ask if we should call an ambulance." Janice ran back to the fitting room desk to get her phone.
"Hey Lilah, you're okay darlin," Brendon spoke sweetly to the girl as he pushed her hair back, "We gotcha."
This routine was all too familiar to him. As he looked down at her, he saw a reflection of you. He felt terrible for this girl, all alone and so vulnerable. She couldn't be older than 13.
"Isn't she going to swallow her tongue?!" One of the women said in great concern, "Does someone have a wallet or something?"
"No no, don't put anything in her mouth," Brendon responded quickly.
"You need to hold her down!" She added insistently.
"No," Brendon repeated, "You'll hurt her if you do that."
"What, are you a doctor?" The woman questioned harshly.
"No," He shook his head.
"Well, are you sure you know what you're doing then?" She prodded, her voice hostile.
