'It's cold,' Rini thinks, tightening her blazer. She really should've worn her school's sweater for once, then maybe she wouldn't have been freezing to death. Sure, she's being overly dramatic, but gosh darn it, it feels just as icy as the North Pole so she has every right to be so.
The school's air-conditioning has always been mind-numbingly frosty, but it seemed like the universe decided to give her an extra bad day with how things seemed to be going. She curses under her breath before skulking down the hallways, one or two students nervously eyeing her. She doesn't bother to glare at them; she's used to all the stares.
From the corner of her eye, she spots Monika and Sayori chatting together. Sayori, much like usual, is practically bouncing on her feet, sapphire blue eyes lit up with excitement. Monika seems to be the calmer of the two, nodding along to whatever the shorter teen is babbling on about. There's that signature, undecipherable smile plastered onto Monika's face, its sincerity and meaning forever a mystery to Rini. She can never really understand the elder, and if anything, she's always found the star student to be slightly.... off. She doesn't particularly question it, though. It's not her business, so she'll keep to herself. Just be a little bit warier of the girl.
Snapping her gaze away from the pair, she's back to watching over nothing. Everything seems to be the exact same as yesterday and pretty much any other day; sunlight filtering in through glass panes, students milling about the place in their daily banter, that annoyingly rhythmic tap-tap of shoes on a mix of concrete tiles and hardwood flooring. There's barely any big events in the school and for that, Rini wants to thank whatever higher being above for some sort of form of mercy. It's bad enough that she has to manage living with her parents. She really doesn't need to deal with petty teenage drama.
She continues her walk, though her steps become slow, far more relaxed. It's more of her ambling past metal lockers and countless classroom doors rather than loitering about the place. She's in no hurry to get home. She'd much rather stall the inevitable anyway, shorten the time her parents have in order to talk to her. It's easier that way.
She lets her eyes wander and take in the normal scenery of a typical Japanese high school corridor, complete with green boards covered in miscellaneous announcements and project posters. She notices how spotless the benches, lined up against beige walls, are. There's not a single speck of dust or anything at all for that matter. Well, except for the boy sitting on one of those said benches, that is.
The guy doesn't seem to be doing much. He's just sitting there, eyes fixated on the floor as if it's the most interesting thing he's ever seen. Rini has a hunch or two that he's most likely thinking about something because although his body is right there, his eyes tell another story.
As if on cue, the mystery boy looks up and meets her gaze. In any other situation, Rini would've scowled at whoever looks at her straight in the eye. But, she's the first to stare, anyway. It's only fair that he would want to check if he was being watched over if he had the feeling. If anything, Rini harbors the habit as well.
"Rini!"
Her mind immediately short-circuits at Sayori's bubbly voice.
"Shit," she mutters, panic seeping into her voice. The boy only quirks an eyebrow at her reaction. He's getting up from his place now, and then he's walking over to her, not breaking eye contact for even one moment. Perhaps if she didn't want to let a break in her levelheaded facade show, she would've done more than continue awkwardly staring back into his grey eyes.
