It was some months later and things were great. Everything was great! Life was great, school was great, Dallas was great! I was convinced Dallas would leave me after our first time together but we have stayed together ever since. There was just one problem. One very big problem. Soda and Darry didn’t know. The others did, even Pony. I knew it was best not to tell them straight away. Darry would be annoyed and try to talk me out of it but I know Soda would get over protective.

I was startled when Dally wrapped his big arms around my torso and kissed the top of my head. I turned around and hugged him. We headed down the street towards the Dingo hand in hand when two boys came around the curb towards us. I couldn’t make out who it was so we kept walking. I looked up “Shit!” I muttered. It was Soda and Steve. Soda stopped dead in his tracks and looked at our hands. Dallas gripped my hand tighter and pulled me in beside him “Tell me it isn’t true?” Soda said half heartedly. I looked at him with pleading eyes “Please don’t be mad! But-” He cut me off “Dally though! Really Mini?” He looked Dally up and down like he was trash “SODA! How dare you!” I yelled at him. “Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked, this time with an even angrier tone. “For this exact reason!” “C’mon man don’t do this! Everything’s cool man” Dally said trying to calm him down but he was clearly frustrated too and I don’t think Dally is the sort of person Soda ought to be messing with. “You shut your trap!” Soda screamed in his face taking a step forward raising a fist. Steve caught it and pulled Soda back. I launched myself at Soda giving him a full blow with my right fist. He clenched his face and walked of with Steve right behind him.

“Not bad” Dallas said. I waited until the boys were out of sight “Mother of mercy!” I dropped to the ground holding my fist in my left hand. Dally pulled me back up and took a look at it. It killed like crazy and I nearly passed out when he put pressure on it “Babe I need to get you to the hospital!” He lead me back to bucks where he borrowed his car and drove me down to the hospital. The doctor said it was broken so they wrapped it up and put a cast on. It was dark by the time we got back home. I walked in the house to see a very bruised angry looking Sodapop Curtis on the coach and Darry reading the paper “Where on earth have you been- What the heck happened to your hand?” He said rising from his chair. “We’ve been at the hospital” Dally explained “Why is your hand like that Mia?” Darry was mad and he was making a point of it. “I told Soda me and Dally were going out and he didn’t take it lightly” I said grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge. “What! How long has this been going on?” “About 4 months” I said bluntly. “But what happened to your hand?” “She broke her hand. Punching Sodapop in the face” Dal said taking a step backwards. Darry was tall and he used his height against the others.

We talked about it for some time and Soda finally apologized to me and Dally. I think he also gave Dally the old ‘If you hurt her I hurt you’ Speech. I went outside to say goodnight to Dally when he pulled me around the side of the house. He pulled out a carton from his pocket, a little velvet box “It’s a promise ring!” He put the ring on my finger and kissed me passionately. I can’t believe Dallas Winston gave me a promise ring! “So when should we tell Soda and Darry?” I asked sarcastically “When I die!” He replied and we both laughed. He got into the car and drove off. I stood there and stared at it for ages. Who knows, I might soon be Mrs Mini Winston!
