Chapter 34. Countdown to the catastrophe

The morning came a bit sooner than I'd expected it to come. I came to the balcony and looked out. I was on the top floor and so I could see even behind the walls. For the second time I could see the power of Gistor and Norvagit army.

I don't know, but it seemed as if it was bigger than the last time I remember. They have already built a big camp on the hills in front of Lorgad. I am certain they haven't attacked yet because they don't understand how come we have such fortress here. Lorgad was supposed to be a small town. Mostly profiting from a fish trade. There was no reason for it to be fortified like this.

I quickly put my armor on and left to assemble my unit.

Soldiers were running around the town and started first preparations. Lords have split our army into three equally big defensive lines and the air cavalry which contained my unit and all dragons trained in the air combat. We were lucky that we have good fortress because we didn't have to use all soldiers.

Kerim made it well I wouldn't expect that. Maybe he really visited that chess course he said he would, during the summer holidays and learned some strategy.

I quickly ran to the barracks and ordered my troops to gather behind the first wall. I commanded them to wait and arm themselves with one crossbow and a melee weapon of their own choice. But not two handed swords, hammers or axes. Those were impractical and I needed them to be fast.

I flew up to the wall and met with lord Worun. He was in the charge of third line of the walls. They had trebuchets and catapults on them and were meant to fire at enemy trebuchets and towers that will approach walls.

- "Is your unit ready?" he asked right after I landed.

- "Yes sir. We will fly out in the moment sharpshooters will near the first line of the walls. Are the trebuchets in a good condition?"

- "Yes they are. Continue in your duty and hope that you will not lead our troops into slaughter."

I had no time for this grumpy snob and so I took off and landed on the second walls. Kerim was there and filled lord Lidrim in the plan.

I landed near them and greeted them.

- "Good morning. How are you Kerim well rested?"

- "I feel okay. My head hurt by the morning, but after I had a proper breakfast everything got fine. I am right now filling lord here into the plan it is good you came."

- "Wait, wait seriously you made a plan?" I asked concerned about that.

- "It is not that much of a plan. Just a strategy. I wanted to cause the most causalities after enemy will breach the first wall. We will pull back our soldiers and then we start the open fire from these beauties." he said and opened the box.

- "Oh Kerim. Really. Are those?" I asked charmed and picked one of the crossbows from the box.

- "Yes they are. I just made a replicas of the crossbow you gave me and removed the bottom from them. And look here." he said pointing on the crossbow's butt.

I looked there and saw there the symbol I put on my crafts and inventions.

- "Oh Kerim you made me very happy. Do the soldiers know how to use them?"

- "Yes they do. I taught it to them today. Wasn't very hard. I will need you to attack enemy sharpshooters above this wall. We will hide in the towers and after you will attack them we will run out and fire at them. It should help you to deal with them quickly."
