16th century,The whole carriage ride to Paris, I had the opportunity to look at the nature, the roads, the villages; it was so different from the 21st century. It was so beautiful, so full of life. You could see animals running, and hear birds chirping everywhere.
This was certainly not the most easy century to live in, but it surely had its perks and ups.
I finally reached Paris and directed the driver, or coachman, to the french travelling house.
There are very few travelling families, we all know each other in our century, future and past centuries. Yup, that’s a lot of people to know.
So, we are all divided, a few travellers reside in each country, owning a travelling house. A travelling house is a home that has been in the exact same spot and has been in our families’ possession since the very first traveller. We have one is almost every big city. So we use these houses to jump from one time to the other.
Well, how do we travel, exactly?
Through pictures.
Or paintings.
They just need to be of real places.
I reach the Paris house and thank the coachman, telling him to leave my stuff at the door.
I go to knock and and it’s Juliette who opens to me. Juliette is of my family.
I quickly hug her, “I’ve missed you.”
Over the course of my life, Juliette and I have visited each other several times, we’re actually very close.
“I’ve missed you too, Lizzy,” she says, hugging me back, “how long are you here to stay?” She asks and I give her a pout, “I’m here to leave,” I say, motioning for the artefact sitting on my luggage.
“Aww,” she says, hugging me again, “well come on, you can’t leave without at least eating something,” she drags me in and to the dining room.
We sit there for a few hours, eating some snack and telling each other everything that happened since the last time we talked. I told her about Bash and my stay at french court.
“Yes, but Lizzy, Mary and Francis will marry, and you know that. You’ve surely studied before coming here,” she asked, giving me stern look.
Juliette is very keen on following the rules, she always does so “à la lettre”, as she would say. She is originally french, obviously so from her name. She has long light brown hair that is always pulled in intricate braids, and big bright hazel eyes. She’s also almost always wearing bright colors, she’s usually very bubbly and talkative.
“I do know that, but maybe they had an affair, I don’t know. But I do know it was a bad idea to let myself stay here and like someone,” I sighed, putting my head down on the table in the most unladylike manner in the world, for this century at least.
“Look, what I can do, is that I can investigate. I probably know someone who can give me informations,” she smiled, “I’ll see and come tell you, I will also be able to visit. I miss cars and air conditioning,” she sighed dreamily, propping her head on her hand.
I giggled as I thought about how much I liked her century. The dresses, the castles, the swords. How funny, we all long for what is out of reach for us.
Some time later, I took my things and made my way to the picture room, every travelling house has one. I looked for the exact day and year of this house I needed, the 16th of july 2018. I found it and reached out my hand touching it, I closed my eyes focusing on the sensation it gave me.
Touching a picture as a traveller, you slowly feel it reaching back for you, wanting to eat you in a way. It sends up a tingling feeling that slowly crawls up your arm, but it’s a good feeling, it’s the magic.
I take a deep breath, focusing solely on that tingling and then I feel everything shift and change, I see light changes from behind my closed eyelids and can feel my hair and clothes flying a little. The artefact also tugs at my arm a bit, as if it’s going to fall down. I had left my luggage at the house, as I wouldn’t be needing the dresses where I was going.
Then I slowly opened my eyes, looking around, recognizing my surroundings.
I made my way through the house, saying hi to everyone there. I quickly went to trade my gown for a modern jean and t-shirt, before making my way out of the house and into beautiful modern day Paris.
Well not really modern, just 21st century.
I took a cab and then took the train back to England. I was actually excited to be back, I had thought I would be sadder, but looking around me in that underwater train, I had indeed missed technology.
Though I did also miss Bash, Francis, Marry, my grandma… everyone that had been so nice to me.
Well, maybe someday I would be back, but for now I was going to go back to school and start working in a museum again.
