  16th century, French court.

  "Would you care to dance?"

I had been standing in a corner for a while now, nibbling on a few bits and pieces, drinking some wine here and there, when a man came up to me.

He, as I had come to understand, was King Henry's bastard son, Sebastian de Poitiers; son to Diane de Poitiers, the king's mistress; and half brother to Francis, the next French King in line.

And he was one main reason why I had come to love this place.

"Of course," I replied, extending my hand to him as I had been taught before. He took hold of it and led me to the centre of the ballroom. We started to waltz, going in synch with the couples around us.

"Elizabeth isn't it?" he asked and I nodded, happy that he had cared enough to ask about who I was, as I had with him.

"My name is Sebastian. It is a pleasure to meet you, Lady Elizabeth," he said, bending down to kiss my hand, before resuming our waltz.

He was very handsome, with piercing blue eyes and dark hair, and I couldn't help but ask, "The dauphin's half brother, are you not? Very handsome for a bastard, I must admit," I smiled.

At this moment, I could only curse myself. I was such a pathetic flirt, what game was I trying to play? But it had gotten out before I could stop it.

Oh god, I hope he wasn't offended by the word bastard.

Well then, let him at least know me for who I actually am, a girl who has her heart on her tongue.

Maybe too much sometimes, but oh, who cares.

   And he laughed.

   He just freaking laughed.

And oh, how his laugh was beautiful.

"Are you always..." he paused, "this straightforward?"

It's called a lame flirting attempt, you idiot.

But it's true though, I am too straightforward for my own good usually.

"Well, I like to call it honesty," I retorted, "besides, are you always inviting women to dance?"

This may have gone too far.

   But it was fun.

"I'll be honest with you," he said referring to my previous comment, "yes, but only beautiful ones."

And in that moment, I swear my heart skipped a few beats.

And the song ended. Too soon though, way too soon.

And for the first time that night, I was happy to have a straightforward nature, and sad to be leaving soon.
