"Amy! There's mail for you!" my mother yelled from downstairs.

I was quick to jump off my bed, away from my laptop where I was facetiming Sarah and Amanda, to run out of my room and towards my mother. She was analysing the piece of mail in her hand with scrunched eyebrows.

I was bouncing on the heels of my feet with a wide, excited grin. My mother chuckled when she saw me and handed the mail over. Despite my excitement, there was also anxiety coursing through me when I read Duke University written in cursive writing on the envelope.

It's been a couple of months and it was now April, the time when some of us receive our college letters to either tell us we succeeded in getting into the school we wanted or that we didn't make the cut. Duke was my second choice as a backup since I had doubts about getting into Juilliard. Turns out, I was right. I didn't get into the one I wanted.

I tried not to let it bother me since it's difficult to get into such a college. I'm still disappointed at my failed attempt to get accepted but I'm sure someone else who deserved it got in. I just hope Duke accepts me or else I'm going to have a dramatic moment of crying under running shower water.

"Do you think I'll get in?" I asked, clutching the envelope in my hand, almost scrunching it up. The anxiety was getting to me.

"I'm sure you will, they would be making a mistake if they didn't," my mother smiled.

My parents had come back at the end of February once my grandmother had recovered. Luckily, she has a carer to help her. They will look after her for as long as she needs it. I'm relieved she's alright though I will be even better once I get to visit her during the summer holidays. Then I can check on her and reassure myself that she's fine.

I jumped at the doorbell ringing, losing my train of thought and crashing back down to reality. Shit! I left Amanda and Sarah on video call! I probably should have told them why I had bolted out of my room. It's lucky we were only talking about our summer plans since graduation is coming up.

We planned to half spend it with our family away from home and the other part together for the last time before we go our separate ways for college. That's when we would only have the break time to visit each other and have to virtually talk to each other.

"Hi, Mrs Prescott."

I instantly spun around, beaming with excitement to see Jack at the door. My mother was holding the door open with a welcoming smile. He must have come early since we were supposed to meet later today with Amanda, Sarah, and John at the café 'Hallowed Grounds'.

Ever since we finished the SATs, we've been spending as much time as we can together during our free time on weekends. Before and during the exams, Jack and I went over to each other's house to study a lot of the time since we were both good at different subjects and helped each other out with the ones we weren't the best in.

The day Jack met my parents, he was nervous and we could all tell. He was sweating, kept fumbling with his words, and held onto my hand. I didn't think I would see him that way but I reassured him constantly on the day that it was all going to be alright.

My father didn't have the best reaction, he was not happy with the outcome because of my past with Jack but Jack managed to show him that he was sorry and that he had good intentions. They were both able to accept him after some time and have gotten used to seeing him around now.

"Hi Jack, call me Gabriela, you've been with my daughter long enough to call me by my name," my mother greeted. Jack awkwardly nodded before glancing over at me with a quirk of the lip upwards. "I guess I'll leave you two alone."
