"Aida...Aida? You awake?". Someone shakes my shoulders gently. It's only Alby thank God.

"Yes?" I croak back.

"I wanna show you something", he whispers.

"Now?"

"Yes. Follow me". I drag myself out of my hammock in the very corner of the Homestead and put my black boots on and my grey jacket over my black singlet. Then I tug my blue jeans up before heading off with Alby. As I slowly wake myself up I realise where he's taking me. The large stone walls.

"Alby, where are you taking me?" I ask, nervously.

"Don't worry, we're not going into the Maze", he replies.

"Maze? It's a maze?"

He sighs and responds by saying "yes".

"That makes no sense". A fucking maze. What is this? A dramatically large version of child's game?

"Here we are", Alby says eventually. We're not in the Maze, but outside it. A wall full of names, some crossed out.

"I'm guessing this is everyone here and everyone...not here in the Glade. The ones crossed out are-" I begin but Alby finishes my sentence. "Gone". He looks at me for a while: studying me like he did yesterday.

"Do you remember how I said we worked hard to get where we are now?" he asks.

"Yeah".

"What I meant was there was once a time without order. It was chaotic, and we lost many of us. It took a lot to get this far. To restore the order and peace among Gladers".

"And?"

"Aida, you don't intend to listen. You go with your instinct and what you think is right, but that's not what we do here. You need permission and you need to follow instructions. You need to be one of us". Then Alby hands me a knife from his pocket and I carve out my name. I become a Glader.
