We arrived at Kos airport around 9pm that same day. We got off the plane on the tarmac and walked into the airport searching for the baggage area, the air was hot and heavy. Our bags finally arrived after a half hour or so. We made our way over the taxi stand to get a cab out to our hotel. It had been a long day of flights and exploring Athens but we were excited to finally be here to start our adventure.
There were several taxi drivers waiting to take tourists to their hotels. They were jockeying and sort of yelling over each other to get our business. It was all a bit mad, so different from what were used to in Boston. Caleb finally chose one and the others yelled what could been obscenities in Geek then went to try and get the next fare.
“Hi, my name is George, can you let me know where you are going? And let me take those bags for you.”
“Hi, George my name is Caleb and this is my fiancé Ivy. We are staying at the Tingaki Springs Hotel. Do you know where that is?”
“I know where all the hotels on this Island are Caleb.” He said laughing.
“Welcome to Kos Caleb and Ivy! I am sure you are going have a great time here.”
I waved and gave George a big smile.
We jumped into the back of the old Mercedes and started to the hotel.
“Caleb, there are no seatbelts in this car. I hope this guy isn’t a nutty driver. I mean I don’t want to get killed on our first night here.” I whispered to Caleb.
“I am sure it’s going to be fine Ivy, just go with the flow and stop being a dork.” He chuckled.
“I am not a dork so be quiet!” As I hit him in the arm and giggled.
“I can assure you Ms. Ivy I am the best and safest driver on this island so don’t worry please.” George interjected in broken English looking back at me through the mirror.
Then he sped off like a bat out of hell laughing out loud.
Caleb and I looked at each other, held on for dear life and laughed as well.
After 20 minutes or so George pulled up in front of the hotel. It was located directly across the road from a beach.
“Ok here is the Tingaki Springs hotel Caleb and Ivy. I will get out your bags and leave you my card in case you need my services again. Just give me a call if you need a ride anywhere.”
Caleb paid George, we said our good byes and thanked him. We headed inside into the hotel lobby.
“Caleb, this is really close to the beach, its right across the street! It’s so nice to hear the waves crashing into the shore.”
“I know, and I saw the pool on the side of the hotel, I am going to jump into that as soon as we get checked in.”
“I’ll be right behind you!” I exclaimed.
As we went into the hotel lobby it appeared very clean, it was typical whitewashed walls with Mediterranean blue accents. We saw the hotel reception desk and walked over.
“Hi, we have a prepaid reservation for two nights.” Caleb said to man behind the desk.
“Welcome to Kos, may I see a copy of reservation sir.” He replied sheepishly.
Caleb passed him the reservation.
“I see that you do have the reservation but we have a problem. Our hotel must have been overbooked as all our rooms are full. The hotel manager is not here right now either. Let me give him call and see what can be done.”
“Excuse me, but this is a prepaid reservation, how could this happen.” Caleb said, his face turning red.
“I do apologize sir, I am only a night staff, and I don’t know how this could have happened. Let me make the call and see what my manager says.”
“Ok please do, but we will need somewhere to sleep tonight.” I said, trying to diffuse the situation.
“Please have a seat, I will get right on the phone and we will try to get something worked out.”
We took our bags and went to sit on the couch nearby.
“Is this really happening?” Caleb said.
“I know baby, let’s see how it plays out ok? It’s not this guy’s fault anyway, no need to get pissed off at him. All we need is bed to sleep in tonight, then we can work this out in the morning.”
“Ok, yes you’re right of course. It still pisses me off though.”
“I know, I know.”
About 15 minutes later he came back out.
“Ok again, we are so sorry for the mix up but we do have a room for you in the next hotel down the road. It’s only a quarter mile down the road and it has the same amenities as our hotel. Unfortunately, I can’t leave the hotel to drive you. But they are expecting you and it’s only a short walk. As far as payment, we told them that we would take care of that for you. The name of the hotel is the Aegean Seas hotel. Just go out the door to the road, take a right, and the driveway will be the first road on the right. It’s set back from a road a little but you will be able to see it as you get close.”
“Ok well thank you, I guess. Its bullshit that we have to walk down there though. We have our drag our bags down the road. This is just fucking great!” Caleb said.
“I am sorry sir but I can’t leave the hotel in case there is an emergency here.”
“Its ok we’ll walk. We will be back to see the manager in the morning. Come on Caleb.”
“Ok he should be here at around 10am miss. I will make sure he knows to expect you.
“Ok let’s go then.” Caleb said.
We grabbed our bags and proceeded out to the road and down the street. There was no moon so we couldn’t see anything, only hear the soft waves rolling in against the beach.
It wasn’t long until we saw the hotel, it was set back from the street by about 100 feet. We tried to see the access road but we hadn’t come across it yet.
“This looks like a field or something, maybe we should just walk across to get to the hotel.” Caleb said.
“Caleb I don’t really want to walk across the field and get all muddy. Let’s walk a little further and see if we can find the road.”
“Ok maybe your right, it’s going to be hard to drag these bags across the field.” He said.
Eventually we came upon the road. We walked down a dirt road and found the hotel entrance on the far side. Walking into the lobby the staff was waiting for us as expected and showed us to our room on the ground floor. Once inside the room, the walls were all whitewashed and there where white tiles on the floor. It seemed clean but the room was hot and stuffy. We pushed the twin beds together and opened the vented windows to let in the light breeze from outside. There was no AC so we turned on the ceiling fan as well and went to look out on our terrace. The pool was right outside the terrace so Caleb got on his shorts and I got into my bikini.
“Ok let’s go cool off, then we will get some sleep, we are both beat Caleb.” I said.
“Yes I agree it’s been a long day.”
We both dived in.
“This is so refreshing!” I exclaimed.
Caleb swam over to me and pulled me close, I wrapped my legs around him and we kissed and lost track of time…..
