Bewilderment

(Sorry about the short chappies--gotta build up suspense, right ;))

A month. The words echoed in my mind. I shook my head.

"No, that can't be."

Faewyn's confusion deepened.

"I haven't dreamt of this for a week and a few days. I've been keeping track." I protested.

"Then our times have finished overlapping," she said gravely.

Now it was my turn to be utterly flummoxed.

"Wha-" I started, then changed course.

We had to visit the Elvenking.

Faewyn nodded, as if reading my thoughts, and took off without another word. We ran hard and fast, not wanting to waste any time. Suddenly Faewyn gave a little cry and put out her arm to stop me, but my momentum flipped me over her outstretched hand and tossed me several feet in an ungainly fashion. I thudded onto the nearby rocks, the shock jarring my teeth and temporarily blinding me.

I was suddenly acutely aware of why Faewyn had stopped me. There was a crowd of elves on horses galloping closer and closer to where I lay. I tried to push myself up, but in my panic, slipped on a wet patch and collapsed again.

"Gianna," Faewyn was heard calling urgently. "Don't move!"

The horses were so close, I could hear their breathing and see the glint in their eyes. Of course, I didn't listen, so with one last effort, I heaved myself up off the ground and dashed towards Faewyn. The lead elf, on a strong-looking white stallion, halted his horse so quickly that it reared and snorted irritably. "Goheno nin, Arod (Sorry, Arod)," he laughed softly, patting the horse's neck.

Faewyn looked up, startled. The stallion nickered and pawed the ground impatiently. The elf dismounted and came towards us.

"I am sorry if we startled you," he began.

Clearly he had witnessed my "circus act". I blushed pink and muttered something about momentum and physics and that it really isn't my fault I don't have good ears.

"Luckily, I didn't run over you." he replied with a wry smile, clearly realizing everything I said.

"You have our sincerest apologies," Faewyn said quickly before I had time to say anything else. "We must be going, for we have a meeting with the Elvenking which must not be missed."

She bowed respectfully and pulled me after her.

"Wait," he called. Faewyn and I turned around. For some reason, he looked surprised. "You have a meeting with my father?"

His father? Thranduil had a son?
