After Blue Highlights and I got our schedules, we headed towards the parking lot where all of the other students were scattered.
"Want to be bus buddies again?" Blue Highlights asked me, looping her arm around mine. I tried my hardest to get her arm away from me, but she has a surprisingly strong grip.
My head turns to look at her. "Um, no thanks. I'm good."
She smiles. "Don't be such a cranky pants."
"I'm wearing a skirt."
"Skirt. Pants. Whatever. Let's go." Blue Highlights starts to pull us towards the passage to start walking to the bus stop.
We were almost out of the huge crowd when Bennett appeared out of nowhere and took hold of my other arm.
"We need to talk," he states, his eyes boring into mine. I gulp as I stare back at him.
"What do you want with my test subject?" Blue Highlights asks. Bennett tore his eyes from me to look at her as if noticing her for the first time.
"None of your business. Now, may you please let go?" Bennett says with a hint annoyance. Blue Highlights opens her mouth to retort, but the bus driver honks. She looks at him then looks back at me, as if waiting for me to pick.
"Um, it's okay. You can go. I'll see you tomorrow..." I trail off, trying to remember her name. She gives a small smile. "Lola. My name's Lola. See you tomorrow, Gabi."
I give her a half-hearted smile as she walks into the bus. After the bus turns away, I turn to look at Bennett, who was watching the whole scene unfold.
Bennett lets go of my arm as I speak. "I know what you are going to say-"
He stares at me intensely. "Then you should leave school before I even say it."
"Bennett-" I tried to say.
"No, we discussed this. This is what is best for everyone!" He interjected.
Tears start to form in my eyes as I look down at the ground. Bennett sighs and puts his hand on my shoulder. "What did we discuss?"
I sniff back my tears and look up at him. "I can't, Bennett. I have to build my life. I have to help Dessy. I have to, Bennett, please."
He starts walking towards a bench and sits on it. He motions for me to sit beside him. I sit and stare ahead as the cars pass by.
Bennett sighs. "Fine. But your name is still-"
"Katherina "Kath" Mack. My sister's name is Lena Mack. Our parents died last year and we don't have any other relatives to take us in. I had just turned 18 so I am obliged to take care of my sister and myself with the myriad amount of money our parents left us in their will, " I recited.
Bennett gives me a small smile. "Is Bentley still sending you money occasionally?" I nod and return the smile. "I promise I will stay away, Bennett. I'll pretend that I never met her if that's what it takes."
"Hopefully, that would work. However, knowing Naomi, she won't stop until she knows the truth. That's how she is, you know?" Bennett says, his smile becoming a bit wider.
"Yeah," I chuckle, recalling past memories with her. "Yeah, I know."

After Bennett walks away, I sighed before getting up and walking home. The walk is about 20 minutes as opposed to a 10-minute bus ride but something tells me I'd rather tune out the world right now and think about how I am going to survive this B.O.O.T Camp.
