A D O N I S

"Why did you save me?" Cora broke the silence in the room, my gaze quickly flickering to her before back at my book.

"I didn't save you," I simply reply back, "I can kill you any moment now, can I not?"

She nod.

"And besides, I did it for my old man." I continue on, raising from my seat.

"That's if he actually said so." I harshly glare at my brother, watching as he try his best to ignore my gaze and continue sipping his hot chocolate.

She smile at me, "Thank you," She whisper, "For everything."

I nod, "Sure." I awkwardly said, tucking my hands inside my pocket and walking away.

~

"Your here."The raspy old man's voice said, a smile wrap around his face as he stare at my brother and I.

"I haven't seen you in long, Adonis."

I nod, sitting down in the chair next to him and begin swinging back and forth, "I know."

Silence fill the room for a few minutes, Alex stepping up and clearing his throat to help fix the lack of communication.

"Where's the girl?" The old man ask, "Where's Cora?"

"She's outside —"

"I told you to protect her, why did you leave her outside?"

"Go and get her."

Alex ran out of the room without another thought, silence walking back in and sitting between father and I.

"Adonis, why haven't you visited me in long?" He ask, his blue eyes widely staring at me.

His skin was the palest I have ever seen him, which concerned me, wrinkles everywhere and freckles covering all over his worn out face.

I swallow the lump in my throat, turning my head to the direction of the door, "Because," I begin and shrug, "I don't know."

"What's the deal with that girl?" I swing the chair further back, "And why are we suppose to protect her?"

"A job for an old friend." He simply reply.

I pause, "So I'm risking my life for an 'old friend' of yours?!"

"Do you know how much money people are paying to get her killed?!"

"Adonis — calm down."

"Everyone wants her dead and I'm not going down with her because of an old friend of yours."

"Adonis —" The old man's wrinkled hand touch mine.

"What about you? Remember when everyone wanted you and your brother dead?"

"Your own family — your own dad — all of them wanted you dead and they still do — where ever they are."

"Yet I took you in — a stranger you met on the streets and provide for you like a son and love you more then the real father you had."

"Now I want you to do me this favor, I may not have very long to live but — promise me your going to do this favor for me."

"Protect her because you were once in that situation and help fight with her through it."

"That's all I ask from you, Adonis." He smile at me, the old smile I miss when I was a little boy, the words falling behind it with, "Your going to be okay."

I sigh, raking my fingers through my hair out of frustration.

"I can't believe I'm agreeing to this."
