As Percy woke, all he could think about was his killer headache and the crashing sound in his ears. His limbs felt numb and sore, like the circulation had been cut off, and a salty wind stung his skin. He opened his eyes slowly, and the sight that met his eyes made him whimper in terror.

One hundred feet below him, vicious waves crashed against the jagged rocks of a cliff face. He was chained by his hands and feet against the rocky side, hanging over the almost vertical drop. His eyes darted wildly across to where his arms were chained. Metal links secured him tightly against the rough rock, the metal digging into his wrists.

Percy's eyes traveled up, revealing that he was merely a meter below the start of the cliff. A brutish, bearded head peeped over the edge, smiling and showing his decaying teeth.

"Oh, good t'a see that your awake!" He laughed, a malevolent gleam in his eyes.

"What are you doing! Get me up from here!" Percy yelled, panicking as he realised how far up he was. At this hight, he wouldn't be surprised if Zues blasted him for 'intruding in his domain'.

Did he mention that he was afraid of heights?

"No can do, boy" the man yelled down. "Ya mistress said ya gotta save ya'self, before the eagles tear out ya liver, just like they did to Prometheus! She mentioned somthin' about proving ya resilience? Well, good luck!" He shrieked as his head receded back over the cliff.

"No! Wait! Please!" Percy screamed out. He dreaded hanging here alone, unable to escape and waiting for his liver to be eaten while he was alive. He attempted to will the water crashing below him, but it was too far away for him to control it. He slumped against the rough stone on defeat and a sense of hopelessness so strong overwhelmed him. He had completed nearly all three of the trials, only to be defeated by stupid metal bonds. As the morning sun beat down on him, all he could think was how he was going to get out of this seemingly hopeless situation.

One day.

One whole day Percy had been suspended from the cliff. His dry lips were chaffed from the biting wind and his wrists were bloody from the rough metal digging into them. During the hours Percy had been hanging there, he had often seen dehydration induced visions of Annabeth. She had come every so often, her blond curls seeming so lifelike Percy had tried to touch them.

"Oh Percy" she had said, her grey orbs clouding with tears. "How did you get yourself into this mess?"

"I don't want to talk to you" Percy had whispered back sadly. "You broke my heart." At those words, Annabeth would turn and disappear.

That was how the conversation went every time he had seen her. He was watching the sun set over the horizon when familiar blond curls appeared next to him.

"Oh Perseus, how did you get yourself into this mess" she whispered the familiar line sadly. This time, Percy was too tired to respond, so he shook his head. Annabeths head cocked to the side, and she said something unexpected.

"You aren't giving up that easily are you? I mean, the answer is quite simple"

Percy's eyes widened an his head snapped up. "What do you mean? "

"Well, Seaweed Brain, do you have anything sharp in your pocket? A sword that always returns to you, perhaps?" She giggled. Percy stared, shocked that he hadn't thought of Riptide sooner. He turned to thank mirage Annabeth, when he was interrupted by a blood - curdling screech from the sky. He looked up and saw a ginormous golden bald eagle swooping down in the distance. Panic fired him up as he started to rip his hand out of the chain cuff. If he could just get his hand free, he would be able to reach Riptide and free himself from the chains, hopefully before the bird got here to rip his liver out. He wrenched his hand again, causing a waterfall of blood to pour over the cuffs and down his arm. The blood was slippery and acted as a lubricant to make it easier to pull his hand out. As the screeches overhead got closer, Percy realised something: his hand was just too big to fit through the hole. There was only one horribly painful solution he could use.

He was going to have to break his hand.

Percy steadied his breathing and close his eyes. "One" he whispererd as the eagle swooped closer. "Two" he said and breathed in. "THREE" he screamed, and wrenched his hand out of the cuff. There was an audible crack as the bones in his hand broke. Percy screamed in agony, the waves of pain blinding him momentarily. He stuck his mangled hand into his pocket and attempted to clutch Riptide, successfully pulling the pen out and uncapping it with his teeth. The pen grew into his sword, and he swung it at the cufflinks securing his ankles. The chains broke, and he scrabbled for footholds on the rocky cliff face. Percy swung Riptide up against the last shackle, the one imprisoning his right arm, and broke it. Using his last surge of adrenaline, he pushed himself up onto the cliff and onto solid ground, just in time to see the eagle swoop down towards him.

He flipped around, and swung his sword straight into the eagles neck, just as it's black, sharp talons embedded themselves into Percy's stomach.

He was in too much pain to even scream when Nyx appeared in her black hooded cloak. "Well done Perseus."

She whispered and waved her hand over his head, then Percy knew no more.
