The brightness of the headlights would burn her eyes if she looked at it. With her hand covering her eyes the only thing she could do was listen to the sound of the car's door opening. Thankfully as the driver stepped out they decided to also turn off the car's headlights.
Finally able to see with the lights having been turned off she took in the driver's appearance. He was tall and lean. His clothes were dark and slick, as was his hair. He stood in front of his car with an amused smirk on his face.
(Name) couldn't help, but stare at him in both intrigue and a hint of fear. The smooth, deep voice that made its way to her ears when he spoke didn't make either feeling diminish. He called out to her "I see you're quite the capable young lady. I was supposed to be meeting that man there to see if he could be my successor, but since you didn't seem to have any trouble with him I don't think he's very suited for the position anymore. You, on the other hand, would be nice to have around".
(Name) thought about booking it out of there right that second, but this guy was offering her a job or at the bare minimum to be his successor. He was definitely a gangster too from how calmly he reacted to her taking down his previous idea of a successor. She decided to stay since he might be helpful to her. "Well, what's your name then?" she asked him.
The dark haired man chuckled before his reply. "I'm Gun. So I take it you're interested in my offer then?"
"I am, but whether I accept it is up to what exactly your offer is".
"My offer's nothing crazy like my partner might try to make. I'm part of a business that I have split with another man. It's nothing illegal since I can see you're wondering. We run it and we both have been looking for a sort of apprentices to, at some point, take over for us. Depending on how old you are I want to offer it to you..."
"I'm twenty-one," she filled in his pause.
"That's unfortunate, since I think having someone older than me take over when I get too tiered is counter-productive. I do still want to have you work with me though. Perhaps you'd consider taking over a roll as my assistant. You'd just be picking things up for me or possibly run an errand if I can't myself".
(Name) took time to consider the option. He said it was nothing illegal, but he could be lying or he could be telling the truth and just run something shady yet not really illegal. The prospect of this other crazier boss also aroused a concern, but she didn't have many options at this point in her life. "I'll take it, but I've got a few things I'll need dealt with in return". Curious, Gun raised an eyebrow. "I've got some debt that needs dealing with'.
Gun took a step back after hearing her answer. "Why the debt? A gambling problem?"
"No, nothing like that. I just made a stupid decision right when I moved out of my old house".
His shoulders relaxed, and he moved closer to (Name) again. "I think I can live with that explanation, so how much debt is this exactly?"
The (hair type) gulped. It was a lot. "It's sixty-thousand dollars," the actual amount of money came out of her mouth quicker than she intended, but she was just glad to have force out the answer all the same.
Gun did not look as taken aback like she had expected. He even smiled and gave a light huff. It sounded like he expected her to be in millions-of-dollars-of-debt. "That's not bad. It shouldn't take long to work off if you decide to go as my assistant. I planed to pay you more, in a year, anyway if you were good at it, so how much is one payment, ...?"
"It's ten-thousand a month, and my name's (Name)".
"Wow, (Name)! You were really stupid to have taken that deal in the first place".
(Name) flustered at Gun's joking insult. "No-no! It got bumped up last minute since the loan sharks can't keep there act together, apparently!"
Gun chuckled again. "Calm down. It is good to see you're not a moron, who takes bad deals, though. I agree to pay off your dept and provide you protection if you become my assistant. It will take the place of your pay for the first six months you work for me. Agreed?"
"Yeah, I agree to that". With their deal made they shook hands.
"So do you have somewhere you live, or do you need someplace to stay?" Gun asked.
"Oh, I live in an apartment that's about a six-hour walk or so from here. I kind of don't want to stay there though with the loan sharks sort of looking for me" (Name) answered honestly. She heard Gun hum as he mulled over the decision in his mind. He ultimately decided that her apartment would be too far from his normal work area to have her stay there anyway, and offered to give her a place to spend the night before finding something more permanent.
(Name) had some faith in her new boss to not put her through anything too awful, but she didn't expect that his apartment would be where she would be sending the night. Once she did know she was hesitant to accept. He eventually convinced her with the fact that she was far from anything she knew and that it was to late for him to argue her any further than that. Afterwards it was a quick, yet awkward, and quiet night before the two went to sleep.
