It was around three O'clock when I left Giltmore High school and decided to go to my friend, Emerson James', apartment. He hadn't been at school for almost three days and wasn't replying to any of my texts or calls.
I walked up the rusty, metallic stairs and knocked on the apartment door. After knocking a few more times and even texting him, I decided to grab the spare key from under the railing and unlock the door myself.

"Emey? Where are you?" I yelled, setting down my backpack, and walking around the warm colored home. I walked down the narrow hall and into my friend's room. "Em?" I said, looking around. Then I saw him, asleep on his desk. His laptop was open in front of him, on snooze mode as well.

At first glance he looked nothing like my best friend. Emerson always kept his hair neatly swept to the right but the boy in front of me, his black hair was all over the place! Instead of young, clear skin, he had dark circles and tear stains on his face. He looked years older. His eyes had bags and his eyebrows were furrowed, wrinkles showing on his normally smooth skin; My heart fell.
I didn't want to wake him up, but he needed to get some rest somewhere comfy. Knowing he was way too heavy for me to pick up (he was on the football and lacrosse team for goodness sake), reluctantly, I gently shook him. "Emerson," I cooed. He stirred, rubbing his eyes.
"Finley, why're you here?" he groggily asked.
"You weren't at school today-or for the past week at that-I thought I'd check in on you." I said quietly.
"I'm fine." He coughed a few times.
"You should probably go to your bed if you're gonna sleep, it'll hurt your back, sleeping like this." I said, coincidentally rubbing his back. He nodded and sleepily got up, shuffling to his bed. I pulled the blanket back so he could easily get in. he pulled the covers up to his neck and laid on his side, facing me. I kneeled down next to the bed.
"Emey, why haven't you been sleeping?"
"Cant."
"Stressed over finals?"
He looked away and was silent for a minute before giving an unconvincing "yeah."
I brushed his hair back out of his eyes. The two of us sat there thinking for a while before Emerson finally spoke. "Do you really want to know why I can't sleep?"
I nodded.
Emerson turned to look at the ceiling before speaking: "I've been thinking bout us," he coughed "I thought that there wouldn't ever be anything between us. like dating wise." He looked over at me, "but Finny, I think I have a crush on you." he grinned, it was uncertain but it was cute.
I smiled, "I think I like you too- I mean Ive thought that for a while now."
He grinned even wider, "Can I uh kiss you right now?"
I felt my cheeks heat up, but nodded. "Sure."
He leaned forward and kissed me. I felt butterflies in my stomach and all that sappy crap that you feel when you're being kissed by the guy you've had a crush on for two years. He pulled back too soon, a giant grin on his face.
"Finny, would you like to be my uh girlfriend?"
"definitely"
We ended up falling asleep together after watching a few movies on his laptop.
