Three major events constituted the darkest year of Mary's life. The first was the death of her mother, who was probably her only reliable ally against her father. Second, she had lost her title as Princess, thereby stripping her of her royal status. Finally, she had to witness her father triumph over her faith when he declared himself supreme head of his own church.
This one year had much of an effect on Mary's future. All future actions taken by Mary would relate back to correcting this tragic year. Mary's execution of Cranmer would be an act of revenge for having destroyed her family and having sent her mother so far away that Mary couldn't even be by her side to comfort her in her final moments. Her renounced title would eventually be reclaimed as she rallied forces behind her to seize the throne after the death of her half-brother Edward VI. Finally, the burning of the heretics and the harsh treatment of the Protestants would be to undo the religious upheaval her father had initiated in his quest for supremacy.
