If there's one thing history remembers of Queen Mary's reign so well, it is her persecution of heretics. During her reign as Queen from 1555-1558, close to 300 Protestants were burned at the stake for unwillingly relinquishing their faith. It is because of these persecutions she has been labeled as "Bloody Mary." Yet this title sends off false connotations about her reign. It is easy to mislabel Mary's reign as the bloodiest Tudor reign of all time. In reality, her own father put to death 72,000 people throughout his reign for various reasons, including failing to recognize him as the supreme leader of the new Church of England. Yet the question remains, why is Mary remembered for being 'so bloody,' and is it really true that she personally favored putting Protestants to death? The two short answers to these questions include: John Foxe being held responsible for Mary's infamy, and local initiatives/sheriffs carrying out persecutions in Mary's name.
