Chapter 8

I don’t know how I knew it was a dream, but I did.

I was in my cell; every detail looked the same as in my waking hours. I don’t know when I fell asleep, but I was glad I did, I really needed oblivion at that point.

There was a girl standing in front of me. I looked up at her from the ground. She had wavy brown hair and kind hazel eyes. She looked around nineteen.

“Hello,” she greeted, smiling. As she did I caught a glimpse of fangs.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“That, is not something you should be concerned about, you should be asking ‘why are you here?’” she responds, I don’t understand what she means.

“Okay, why are you here?” I try again.

“I have a message for you.” She smiles again. Though her eyes are kind, I see something in them that I can’t determine. “You, my friend are needed. You are a very special human. You have a job.”

A job? “I’m sorry, what?” I question,

“There are people in your home town that are suffering, they miss you. They miss the rest of the kids trapped with you.” She says softly. “You need to find a way to get home.”

“Who are you to tell me what I need to do? What if I’m content where I am?” I demand.

“Would you go home if I told you your brother was planning suicide?” she asked.

I gaped “What?”

“Yes Holly, a month from today, if you don’t return home in a month from now, he will kill himself.”

“How could you possibly know that?!” I exclaimed. My brother, my sweet, innocent fifteen year old brother.

“I must go.” She whispered.

“No!” I shouted! “Who are you?”

She pondered for a moment. “A God.” She whispered.

When I awoke my neck burned. My head was a mess, it pounded and throbbed and I couldn’t think.

I had a weird feeling, like I’d just woken up from a dream that I should remember.

Suddenly I heard screeching; a grate pried open.  There was a horrible scream, so close it rattled my bones. I knew it was Joyce’s.

She screamed and screamed and it made me feel the pain of Jace’s bite again.

“OH GOD!” she screamed. “OH GOD

God.

I remembered the dream.

The girl who told me my family missed me. The girl who told me my brother was going to kill himself. The girl who called herself a god.

I put my head between my knees and took deep breaths.

It had only been a dream, my conscience telling me to get my ass back home.

God didn’t exist.
