Ten
I was stupid happy after I’d heard Jace’s retelling of the story; one, he’d found his talent, two, he’d ditched Veronica. Even though the whole idea was a huge risk, it’d ended with a win.
I was tired after my day out of the cells, honestly, I don’t know why I kept wanting to go back to that horrid place but for the fact that it felt more comforting there than with Jace, at least for now.
Jace dropped me off without even feeding, which concerned me because it’d been at least two days since he had. He had purplish bruises under his eyes, so I knew that he was thirsty.
“I might come by tomorrow.” he said when I asked him about it. “But seriously, I drank that spiked tea at Kyliee’s, I’m good for now.”
I didn’t argue with him.
When he left I sat leaning against the concrete wall.
“Holly.” A voice whispered, “Holly.” The voice croaked again.
I knew that voice. “Joyce?” I asked.
“Holly.” I shuffled over to her side of the cell.
“Joyce, what’s wrong?” I asked softly.
“I-I fell faint.” she told me. It was too dark to make out much, but if I squinted, i could just see the out line of her. She was laying on the floor, her arms wrapped around herself.
“Why?” and then it hit me. She’d been losing too much blood.
“The Vampire comes everyday. He takes too much blood and I don’t think I can take it anymore.” She shuddered, confirming my theory. “I’m so tired.”
“Your going to be okay.” I whispered.
“I want to go home.” She whimpered.
“I know Joyce,” I said, “I know. We’ll get you out of here, I promise.”
A sob came from her, and I knew that she knew there was no hope.
“I’m going to die.” she whispered between sobs.
“No.” I said, “No your not.” I told her. “You can not die on me Joyce. You can not.” I commanded her.
“I’m sorry Holly, I don’t think I can stay alive any longer.”
My heart broke. My best friend was dying.
I pressed my face against the chain link separating us. I strained to see more clearly, but it was so dark. Her eyes were shut, and her face was peaceful, she looked relaxed, aside from the tears on her cheeks.
“Thank you for being my friend Holly.” She mumbled quietly.
She exhaled, and her shoulders slumped.
I backed away from the fence between us. I crouched with my back against the concrete, and drew my knees up to my chest. I pressed my hand over my mouth to try to hold in the sobs, but it was no use, tears streamed down my face and shudders racked though my body. Joyce was dead. My best friend was dead. How did I let this happen? I was the only one strong enough to break us out of here, and now with one dead, and the vampires still feeding, I know no one will have the energy to run.
I let myself get side tracked, Jace was my distraction, and I was selfish, not paying attention to the rest of the kids trapped in here with me.
I let my head fall back at stared up at the ceiling it was very high, and made of metal, steel beams held it up.
