I woke up to sunshine in my face. I hear my alarm clock. 6:30. Oh crud. Charlotte and Felicity will be here in 30 minutes. I quickly pull on my pink tank top, my light blue shorts and my new blue strappy sandals. I throw my chestnut hair into a ponytail, wash my face, brush my teeth, and put on some makeup. I'm not the kind of person that puts so much makeup on that it looks like a crayon raped my face. I am the kind of person who leans more towards the natural side.
"Maddie. Get your butt down here now. We need to go get food," I hear Charlotte yell.
"Geez Char. You need to relax I'll be down in a minute," I reply. I grab my bag, phone, and wallet and run out the door.
"Hey Felicity," I say.
"Hello Lizzie," she replies. Did I mention that Felicity calls me Lizzie sometimes 'cause we both think I am most like Lizzie from Babysitting the Host Club, one of the best anime television shows ever made? However, Char and Fel don't agree with me. They say and I quote, "If you have not seen Titan Lies, you clearly have not lived." So apparently I haven't lived. I look at Charlotte who is wearing her Magcon shirt with one of my skirts which she "borrowed". She has her shoes from the sports awards banquet on and has her dirty blonde hair in a messy bun. Felicity is wearing her Titan Lies shirt, her cute little hat, her new boots, and her fake black glasses. If the three of us were ranked from the most girly to the least it would be Charlotte, me, and then Felicity.
"Maddie. We're here," Charlotte says. I quickly hop out of her black convertible and run to the line. I only run because I know how some of the girls at my school are about their coffee. It's actually quite scary.
"Hey Aves," I say.
"Hey Maddie. The usual I presume?" asks Avery. I nod. Avery works at the local coffee shop before school, so we get discounts. What? We still have to pay. After everyone has ordered, all four of us head to school. When we get out of Charlotte's car, we see Lexi and Caleb. They are, no joke, the most awesome couple at Richmond Beach High.
"Oh my god! It is so great to see you Maddie! How was your summer?" Lexi exclaimed running over to the four of us. I love Lexi to death, but sometimes she can be REALLY loud, as in louder than me, Charlotte, Felicity, Avery, and Sarah combined.
"Great. Thanks for asking. How was your summer?"
"Amazing as usual," Lexi replied.
"Hey Maddie," Caleb said.
"Hola amigo," I replied. Caleb just smiled and walked away.
"What?" I asked, after getting weird looks from my friends. Honestly, I do know what's going on. I just don't get why I can't be friends with my friend's boyfriend. I mean it's not like anything is going on between us.
"We're just friends Lexi. I would never steal your boyfriend from you. I swear. No, I cross my heart, hope to die, stick a needle in my eye."
"Okay fine," Lexi replied, and walked off to go find Caleb.
"On a totally related topic, well sort of, has anyone caught your eye Maddie? Well besides Justin since the two of you are dating," asked Charlotte.
"So you're asking Maddie if she likes anyone while she has a boyfriend?" Avery questioned.
"Whatever," was Char's reply.
"Well," I started to reply.
"Wait a minute let me guess," Charlotte demanded.
"Umm okay."
"Jake?"
"No."
"Vince?"
"No."
"Jacob?"
"No."
"How about Tyler?"
"Nope."
"How abou-" Charlotte started, but I cut her off.
"Apparently you can't guess, so I'm just going to tell you. I like," I began, taking a deep breath. "Zach," I said with my eyes squeezed shut because I knew what my friends' reactions would be.
"You like Zach?!" Cue the reactions. "Maddie, I love you and all, but Zach, really? The most popular guy in school and Valerie's ex," Felicity stated. There were murmurs of agreement amongst my friends.
"I know. I know. But we are good friends and I need someone to help me get over Justin. I know he will always be there for me."
"Woah, woah, woah. Stop the traffic. You and Justin are finished? What happened?" Avery asked, sympathy in her voice.
"Oh you know. I just got cheated on," I murmured.
"What?!" screamed all my friends. By now Sarah had came over and caught on with what was happening. "That little mother fucker is going down!" she screamed.
"I am going to kick his ass so hard he will fly all the way to Australia!" Charlotte yelled.
"When I'm through with him, he is going to wish he never cheated on you," Avery started venting out her anger. Suprisingly, me and Fel were the only calm ones.
"Who did Justin cheat with?" asked Felicity.
"Umm. Valerie."
"Well, if it isn't the queen bitch herself," Felicity said as Valerie passed us, snickering with her minions.
"Yeah. Tell me about it," Charlotte says, "I finally see your reasoning about dating your enemy's ex boyfriend."
"We're not dating Char. He probably doesn't even like me. Besides we're just friends. Also, I don't have a crush on Zach because he was Valerie's ex- boyfriend. I like him because we have a lot of fun together."
"Which you want to change," interrupted Avery.
"Even if we ever to get together, I wouldn't be good enough for him," I replied.
"Girl, you are popular, kind, smart, drop dead gorgeous, and just carefree. You are captain of the volleyball team, a spectacular cheerleader, and since Zach is student body president you work right next to him as student body vice president. You're telling us that you're not good enough for him? What is wrong with you?" questioned Sarah. I basically heard, "Yeah Maddie." from everyone else.
"Have you told him that Justin cheated on you yet?" asked Charlotte.
"Yeah," I replied.
"How did he take finding out that Valerie cheated on him too?" Felicity asked.
"He broke up with her," I said happily. Everybody looked at me and we all started cracking up. We got strange stares from some of the freshmen and sophomores. Felicity immediately flipped them off which made us laugh even more. I saw someone's shadow come up from behind me.
"Hey guys. What's happening?" Only one person could make me melt with the sound of his voice, Zach. I turned around and bumped into him. Looking up, smiling, I said, "Nothing much. The same old Felicity flipping people off." Zach just chuckled.
"I will never get tired of your friends Maddie."
"I know. They will always be keeping me on my toes."
"Well, I'll see you later."
"Ok. Bye." I was frickin' red. I could tell.
"Damn Maddie. You got it bad," Avery giggled.
"Yeah, whatever."
I walked to my locker that was right next to Zach's. Can this day get any better? I was proved that it could when I found out all of my best friends were in all my classes. When I found out, I practically fell to my knees and thanked God for this miracle. First period was Biology with Mr. Sunshine. Seriously, that's his real last name. This is the thing about my principal, she hired someone named Mr. Sunshine for our biology teacher, but he hates children. He told us. When I heard that statement, I had to fight the urge to go to the front of the room and slap him silly. It's not that he hates us that bothers me, because sometimes we can be a real pain in the butt, but the thought that he can hate a five-year-old is despicable.
"Okay class," Mr. Sunshine starts in a monotone voice, "Today we will be learning about photosynthesis." I internally groan. I learned about this in the sixth grade. Sometimes I wonder if he takes lessons from younger grades, because he is so lazy. I pull out my textbook when my phone starts to ring. I quickly grab my phone, throw it in an empty trash can, and look back down at the book. I can always get it back later. "Whose phone is that? I thought I clearly stated that there are no phones in my classroom," Mr. Sunshine stated after the phone stopped ringing,"Was that conversation completely pointless to you?" Yes, I thought to myself.
"No," the class muttered.
"Well, whatever." Mr. Sunshine remarked. Did I also mention that Mr. Sunshine is bipolar too? He can go from mad to normal in the blink of an eye. It seriously scares the living daylights out of me.
"Miss Chambers, please start reading." I look up at him. Is this even happening? Mr. Sunshine doesn't usually notice that I don't pay attention to the lesson during the middle of the school year. I guess he finally realized he has to keep me on my toes as well. I can't blame him though. Most people fall asleep, because all he ever does is talk. "Okay," I reply. "Photosynthesis is a process used by plants and other organisms to convert light energy, normally from the sun, into chemical energy that can be later released to fuel the organisms' activities. This chemical energy is stored in carbohydrate molecules, such as sugars, which are synthesized from carbon dioxide and water - hence the name photosynthesis, from the Greek φῶς, phōs, 'light', and σύνθεσις, synthesis, 'putting together'. In most cases, oxygen is also released as a waste product. Most plants, most algae, and cyanobacteria perform photosynthesis, and such organisms are called photoautotrophs. Photosynthesis maintains atmospheric oxygen levels and supplies all of the organic compounds and most of the energy necessary for life on Earth."
"Thank you Miss. Chambers. Now Mr. Quick, would you continue?" The rest of the period went on like this. Okay, I had to admit that what we learned about photosynthesis in the sixth grade was nothing compared to what we learned today.
"Hey guys," I say to my friends as I sit down at our table.
"Hi Maddie," they all replied. By now Zach and all his friends (Caleb, Tyler, Jake, Jacob, and Vince) had joined us as well. This is new. I mean yeah, me and my friends are popular too, but Zach and his friends usually sat with Valerie and her friends. I guess that changed after what happened. I feel offended somehow. Is our table just a place the boys can occupy until Valerie comes crawling back to them? Yep. I'm offended. Don't get me wrong. I'm feeling like I'm walking on air having Zach sit with us. When I put my tray down, I saw Avery telling Lexi something. As I'm sitting down, I caught Lexi smirking at me. I have a strong feeling that Avery told her I like Zach. Sometimes I feel like I need to put duct tape on Avery's mouth so she won't blab all my secrets.
All the boys are complaining how Mr. Simian is giving them extra math homework because they kept disturbing the class with their jokes, or as I like to call it their "stupidity". Yeah, I know, harsh, but still, their stupid stories are in a way the funniest things on the planet. Anyway back to what I was saying.
The boys were complaining when Zach leaned over and whispered, "How are you holding up?" Aww. My heart did a backflip at his concern. Woah, Maddie calm down. You're starting to sound like Charlotte. Charlotte is into a lot of all that mushy gushy romance crap. I'm not saying that I don't like it, I'm just not into it as much as Char is.
"I have had better days," I reply. Zach gives my hand a reassuring squeeze. I smiled. "Thanks for everything," I say.
"We're in this together okay?"
"Okay." I was about to finish eating the last couple of bites of my burger when I notice two people coming up to our table. Oh no. "Umm Zach." I say.
"Yeah, Maddie?" I point to the two people walking. Everybody turned around to see. Well that wasn't supposed to happen.
"Hi Zach," Valerie started with innocent voice, when she saw him. Then, she saw me. "Ugh. And Maddie." What's stuck up her ass? I thought to myself. Oh wait. Everything.
"Justin," I growled.
"Hey babe," Justin said with a smirk. "Long time no see."
"Yeah. Whatever."
"So we all know that the only reason we even came over here was because it would benefit us," Valerie cut in.
"How?" Zach asked cautiously.
"It depends on how you see it," Valerie replied.
I leaned over and whispered to Zach, "Okay. Now I'm officially scared."
"What is it you want from us anyway?" Zach asked Valerie and Justin.
"We want to talk to Maddie in private," Justin stated. Okay. Forget what I said about this day getting better. I think I might not live through the rest of the day.
