January 15th

Dear Diary,

Steven is even more of a gentleman than I'd originally thought. He picked me up at eight PM on the dot, which already made me ecstatic. Someone who understands exactly what time everything should be deserves my trust.

We drove to the cafe. He was wearing a nice pair of dark-wash jeans, and a collared short sleeved pale shirt that complemented the green of his eyes under a thin jacket. I felt awkward in my own outfit- a grey sweater over a white collared shirt and dark jeans. He just looked so...comfortable in his attire. I felt as if I had dressed wrongly for the occasion, no matter how many times Steven or Mum complimented me on it.

He parked in a nice spot, directly in front of the cafe. It was a spot right next to all of the handicapped spots, but was still perfectly placed. He held the door for me, both the car's and the cafe's. We got a table right away, and I was pleased to see that the cafe was mainly empty. Our table was right at a window.

A waiter came, and the two of us immediately recognized him.

"Hey, Levi."

He smirked. "What can I get for you two lovebirds today?"

I told Steven what I wanted, and he relayed the information over to Levi.

The food came not too long after.

We chatted for a bit, or, rather, Steven did the talking and I just signed my responses.

I feel like I wouldn't mind speaking anymore, if it made Steven happy. I'm fine with it, strangely.

Steven drove me home at the end of the date. I told him it was wonderful, because it was. I hadn't been as happy as I was that night in a long time. I told him that, too.

He said he was proud of me. And that we should do it again sometime soon. I agreed.

Then he did something unexpected.

Steven Rivers leaned across the console of the car and gently pressed his lips against mine.

I sat there in shock before melting slightly.

"Sorry," he said, looking away.

"Don't be," I signed after tapping him on the shoulder.

He smiled faintly.

"Hey, there's something I've been meaning to tell you recently. I just haven't had the chance to." He slid his hand into mine, his warm, calloused fingers wrapping around mine.

"Will you be my boyfriend?"

I nodded, the shock that had just left came back in full force.

"I love you," I whispered. My first words in America.

His eyes widened in surprise.

"You can..." I just nodded in response.

"I don't do it often. Only when I feel I should." I signed this. It was too much to say at the moment.

"You should talk more often," he murmured with a kiss to the top of my head. "It's beautiful."

I smiled shyly. "Maybe I will."

I really did mean it.

Sincerely,

Charles David Barnes
