The light shown brightly through my window and right into my eyes making me groan in irritation. My mother had probably come in and opened my curtains again. I huffed loudly before throwing the blankets off of me and rolling off the bed. I walked into the bathroom and hastily brushed my teeth and hair, before padding down the stairs in search of food. I walked into the room and rummage through the cabinets before spotting a yellow paper on the granite counter top.

I walked over to it and read it over.

Kara your father and I left at 9 this morning. There is money in the safe in our room if you need it (Don't spend it all in one place darling). Reception and internet is going to be spotty in the mountains, so don't bother calling or texting. See you when we get back. Mom and Dad.

I scoffed before crumpling the note and tossing it into the trash. They get to leave for a month and a half to go on some skiing and backpacking trip in Sweden and I get stuck here all on my own with a note and money in a safe. Typical.

My parents were both defense attorneys, and they were barely ever home, but this is just fucked up. At least I will be alone for those glorious days. I grab my phone from the counter and text the one person who could liven up this mood

Hey babe.

Hola schnookums. I laugh at her shaking my head.

Any plans for today? I'm bored.

There's a new club opening downtown. Wanna go ;)

Yessssss.

I'll be there in two hours.

Okay come upstairs , door will be unlocked.

Two hours? Isn't that a bit early. I look at the clock. Shit! It's already 5:00, I practically slept all day. I pour a good sized amount of Count Chocula in a bowl and douse it with milk. I nearly inhale the cereal and put the bowl in the sink.Walking lazily into the bathroom I stretch and yawn. I put the plug in the bathtub and begin to fill it with warm water.

I strip out of my top, shorts, and underwear and sit in the tub. The water comes up to my chest and I just lay there closing my eyes relishing in the relaxing warmth. I must have fallen asleep somehow because the next thing I know water is being splashed onto my face. I wipe the water from my eyes to see Kate standing there with wet hands laughing hysterically.

"You bitch." I say laughing along with her. Kate and I had a special relationship where the worse we talked to one another, the more it meant we cared. But hey what are best friends for.

"You asked for it. I mean seriously who the fuck leaves their front door unlocked while taking a bath. I could've been a fucking serial killer for all you know." she said sounding authoritative.

I laugh. "Yes a serial killer in a gated community." I say monotonously rolling my eyes.

"Kara it could happen. Bad things happen all the time. Plus there is that new gang in town and things have been getting a lot worse. I just want you to be careful."

I look at her puzzled. Yes Kate and I lived in the same town, but our world were completely different. I lived in a gated community in a big house while she lived in a duplex on the not so nice part of town. Her dad raised her on his own, he was a cop. Though I'd never met him I heard a few good stories about him. He was a kind and gentle man, very protective of Kate. He died a few years ago. Shot while he was workiing, leaving Kate all alone. She hadn't seen her mom in years. Kate says she can't even remember the features of her face, or the way her voice sounded. She left when Kate was 4, never sending a letter or bothering to call.
