"So, what are your plans with Matthew today?" Arthur asked as he welcomed Gilbert into the house the next morning. He seemed skeptical, like he didn't believe anything Gilbert could do would help.
"I might take him out for ice cream, if I can get him out of bed."
"That sounds nice. Just be careful because he can be hard to drag home if he panics over something."
"I can carry him. It's no problem."
"Great." Arthur reached into his pocket, taking something out and handing it to Gil. "Here are his meds. Sneaking them into food works sometimes but usually not."
"Thank you." Gilbert slipped the packet into his pocket.
"He needs to take them once a day. I'll give you new ones when you run out."
"Arzhur, who is at the door?" Francis called from the other room.
"Just Gilbert."
"Oh."
"You can just go ahead." Arthur told Gil.
"Danke."
Gilbert walked through the house, passing one of the living rooms, where Michelle and Peter were sticking flowers into Francis's hair.
He waved as he passed on his way up the stairs.
He opened the door as slowly as he could, not wanting to startle the man inside.
"Hey, Mattie..." The room was dark, so Gilbert turned on the light.
Matthew was curled up in bed, under heaps of covers, his face stuffed into the pillow in the cutest way.
Gilbert remembered the first time they had spent the night together, how warm and gentle waking up next to him had been.
Part of him, a very large part, wanted to go back to that time, when everything felt safe and his coping mechanisms hadn't turned against him. He wanted to turn the clock back two years and stop himself from fucking Matthew up like this; for fucking them both up.
"Mattie...wake up." Gilbert said gently. He touched the blond's shoulder, feeling his heat through the blankets.
Matthew's eyes slowly opened, blinking away sleep. His gaze was so hazy, confused, and mesmerizing. Gilbert could feel himself breaking into a goofy grin but he couldn't stop himself.
"Wanna get ice cream?"
Matthew's foggy eyes lit up with so much glitter, it was like he was coming to life again.
"I'll take that as a yes, but you have to do some things for me first, got it?"
His face scrunched into a pout.
"Don't give me that look. Only good behaviour gets rewarded."
Matthew sat up, stretching his muscles.
"Okay, you need to take your meds and also a shower." His hair was such a mess, Gilbert didn't want to take him out like this.
Matthew held out his hand. Gilbert blinked at him.
"What?"
He rolled his eyes, holding his hand up to his mouth.
"Oh. Meds." The albino reached into his pocket for the package Arthur had given him. He popped one pill out and held it up to Matthew, who took it and swallowed it down using the glass of water by his bed.
"Awesome. You're awesome. Good job."
Matthew shrugged.
"Okay, let's get you into the shower, you smelly thing."
The Canadian replied with his middle finger and a scowl.
