VarnLiqn jumps on top of my head and lets out a squeal of delight. "Die chick chick!"
I sink to one knee, allowing myself to suck in a series of long breaths. I can't help but laugh, knowing I'm still alive. Eve hurries to my side and helps me to my feet. "Start up the deep fryer," I tell her.
"I knew you could do it!" says Eve, gasping a laugh. "Whatever you do, don't let go of the sword."
I nod, using the mystical weapon as a cane to keep myself upright.
Eve wraps her hand around mine. "Everything will be okay." She doesn't sound very convinced.
"Why was the Cockatrice so terrified of VarnLiqn?" I ask.
"He was our secret weapon," says Eve. "Cockatrices are terrified of weasels...they're the only animal unaffected by its paralyzing gaze."
"But VarnLiqn's a raccoon," I counter.
Eve shrugs. "Close enough I guess. VarnLiqn and I figured it was worth a shot. That rooster lizard literally shit itself after seeing him. See that long white string of—"
"Ew," I interrupt. "Cool down the oil. I'm not hungry anymore."
