Silence.

In most cases this would be peaceful. Serene even. But this silence was more suspenseful, more gutwrenching. The exact opposite.

" Ember, please go check out upstairs." Horace orders me quiet politely.

" I... I can't go out there!" I squeaked." What if the hollows still out there? I wouldn't be able to seem him I-I want to at least bring someone with me." I stood up, careful to not make anymore noise than I already had.

I looked around the basement, meeting the eyes of these people. Meet children and teenagers who meet my blue eyes with worried looks that held back more emotion. But you wouldn't have  been able to tell with the dignified poses they held and the straight faces they kept.

" I'll go with you Ember." Selene says at last. She had turned back into her human form a moment ago. I looked into her bright emerald green eyes. She too seemed to be afraid but smiled at me briefly.

" Thanks Selene. Thanks for coming with me even though we could die." The last words hung in the air, drying like clothes on a wire. The room itself seemed to wince in pain. But the fact that I wasn't alone despite being afraid... that made me sigh with relief.

" Igh, off with the mushy gushy love stuff already. Friendship is great and tuck. Get movin Ash-head." Enoch grumbles at me.Although when I read his mind, he was thinking the exact opposite.  I felt a pair of arms wrap around my left leg and another hang from my right.

" Please don't go Ember- you're like our big sister." Claire says. I smile and almost cry.

" That was a great birthday gift but seriously girls- I should check." With some resistance Olive and Claire release my legs. I grabbed Selene's hand and walk up the stairs.

Each step toward the door felt like a mile. The looks and stares at my back felt like a weight I was forced to bear. Selene didn't seem much better. I squeeze her hand encouragingly.

" Get ready to run if anything happens." I warm the other Peculiar a. But just as we were a few steps from the door ( which felt like a few thousand miles)...

There was a knock on the door.
