The sun streamed through the open window, onto Nathan's face, but still he remained in bed, his eyes closed as he pretended to be asleep. He was hoping that if he kept his eyes closed long enough, and willed sleep to come, it would, but he actually became more and more restless the longer he laid there. He didn't want to wake up, officially, because doing so would mean he would have to face his problems, and Nathan simply was not ready to do that. At the moment, he was perfectly fine laying in bed thinking about things that kept his mind off of anything from the night before.
Nathan tried to recall every detail from a memory with his parents that for some reason came into his mind that morning. It was an old memory, one from the summer before freshman year, when they had gone to New York for three weeks in the summer.
Osmond and Carmen had left Florida for five years after high school to attend college in New York, and Carmen thought to would be cool to show Nathan the state and the places that his parents used to spend time.
It was during that trip that Nathan's struggles at his current school became apparent to his parents.
Nathan had just lost all his weight at the time, but was being lenient with his diet due to the many options of food New York City had to offer.
When they went out to get dinner one afternoon, their male server was very cute, and Nathan didn't hesitate to tell his parents as much.
Carmen's eyebrows just raised. "You think he's cute?" Carmen asked, shooting his husband an amused look that Osmond rolled his eye at. "I think he's a little too old for you Nathan".
"Well I don't want to date him," Nathan explained. "He's just cute". Carmen hummed and Nathan dipped a french fry in ketchup and brought it to his mouth.
"What about people at your own school?" Carmen asked and Osmond made a noise.
"He just finished eighth grade, Carmen," Osmond grumbled, but Carmen just shrugged.
"So? He's allowed to like people, Oz," Carmen pointed out with a smile and his husband just sighed loudly. "So, are there any special people at school that you're interested in?"
Immediately, at the mention of school, Nathan's mood decreased and he dropped his eyes to his plate. "Uh, no".
"Hey," Carmen squeezed his hand. "What's up kid? Why do you do that every time we bring up school, Huh?"
"Because I hate it there," Nathan grumbled. He reached a hand out to grab a French fry, and simultaneously remembered exactly why all of his classmate had begun to pick on him and pushed the tray away.
"You don't hate it," Carmen argued softly and Nathan glared at his father.
"Yes I do".
"But what about your friend Nico?" Carmen asked. "Your teachers always say that you two spend a lot of time together".
"Nico is not my friend," Nathan growled, his voice getting as deep as a twelve year olds could. He watched Carmen shoot Osmond a look from the corner of his eye, but Osmond was only looking at Nathan.
"Nate-"
"Carmen?" Osmond interrupted, pulling out his wallet and handing it to his husband. "Why don't you go and pay".
With furrowed eyebrows, Carmen took the wallet. "But-" he began, and Osmond shot him a reassuring look. "Alright".
When it was only the two of them at the table, Osmond sighed loudly and propped his elbows up, clasping his hands and bringing them up to his mouth. It was quiet. "What?" Nathan asked, and his father's gray eyes narrowed. "Dad, What?"
