Part 5
To new destinations where winds come and go
Raw washed up places out of your control
We're still waking up to beautiful music
And a life without purpose is no life at all
Anouk~Its a new dayAs the new day dawned, we embarked on the beginning of our new life in this unfamiliar place. Alice, though still rough around the edges, seemed to have gained a newfound sense of vitality compared to the previous day. With a sense of determination, we set out to attend the announcement meeting for all new residents.
Leaving Alice with the others, Brenda and I made our way to the meeting, unsure of what to expect but eager to learn more about our new surroundings. As a matriculant back home, I was informed that I would be heading straight into training – a prospect that both thrilled and intimidated me. The idea of donning a suit and heading off to work had always been a distant dream, but now it was becoming a reality sooner than I had anticipated.
During the meeting, we were instructed to register everyone properly, as Monday marked the beginning of the program. The atmosphere in the room was tense, with a mixture of emotions evident on the faces of the new occupants. Some appeared anxious yet hopeful, while others were clearly overwhelmed and yearning for the comforts of home.
As the announcements concluded, a sense of uncertainty hung in the air, mingled with a glimmer of optimism for the opportunities that lay ahead. It was a tumultuous day, with the task of registering six individuals – including myself – adding to the chaos of the situation. Yet amidst the uncertainty, there was a sense of unity among us, a shared determination to face whatever challenges came our way as we embarked on this new chapter of our lives.
After enrolling the children for school and little Lesedi for crèche, Brenda headed home while I proceeded to the offices to register myself for work. As I stood in line, waiting for my turn, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease creeping over me. The pressure to make a decision about my future career weighed heavily on my mind.
I had never given much thought to what I wanted to be after matric. The idea of choosing a career path felt daunting, and here I was, expected to make that decision in an instant. The queue seemed to be moving too fast, and I felt a sense of panic rising within me.
As I approached the desk, the lady behind it greeted me briskly, requesting my full name, ID, and my choice of work. My mind was racing, and before I knew it, I blurted out my decision loudly, startling everyone in line. The sudden silence that followed was deafening, and I felt my cheeks flush with embarrassment.
It was as if I had been wearing headphones and couldn't hear how loud I was speaking. In that awkward moment, I hastily handed over the papers and made a hasty retreat, covering my mouth with my hand as I walked towards the exit. All eyes were on me, and I could feel the weight of their judgment bearing down on me.
As I finally stepped outside, the murmurs of the crowd resumed, and I breathed a sigh of relief, grateful to escape the scrutiny of the moment. Despite the embarrassment, I knew that I had taken a step forward, albeit clumsily, towards shaping my future in this new and uncertain world.
As I hurriedly tried to make my way out of the office, I accidentally collided with someone, causing my papers to scatter all over the floor. "God help me, I'm so sorry, I didn't see you," I apologized, bending down to retrieve the scattered documents. However, when I looked up, there was no one there. It was as if I had bumped into a ghost. The encounter left me feeling unsettled, and I couldn't shake off the eerie feeling as I gathered the rest of my papers.
Despite the strange incident, the rest of the day seemed to unfold smoothly. Everyone back at the house was eager to start anew on Monday, filled with hope and anticipation for the opportunities that lay ahead. Wanting to share in the moment, I headed to the park to meet up with everyone as planned.
As we gathered in the park, basking in the warmth of the sun and the tranquility of our surroundings, a sense of peace washed over us. We lounged on the grass, enjoying a simple picnic as we reflected on the events of the day and the journey that lay ahead. The children laughed and played, their joy infectious as they explored the lush greenery around them.
In that moment, surrounded by the ones I cared about, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. Despite the challenges that lay ahead, we were together, and for now, that was enough. As we watched the sun begin to set, casting a golden glow over the park, I couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope for the future. Today may have been filled with uncertainty, but as we sat there, breathing in the fresh air and soaking in the warmth of the sun, everything felt right, if only for a moment.
