Lauren had to go out early for an audition that morning, before the post came. But when she got back, she saw the letter on the doormat (a custom made one with Diane's face on it, which was one of the presents Joey had been most proud of over the years. It was just about beat out by the Golden Girls monopoly game). A few minutes later, the neighbour knocked, handing over the bunch of flowers that had been left with them for her. She may anticipate the flowers and the letter each day by now, but that didn't mean she was any less touched.

Dear Lo,

Nine. The number of years we've known each other. The number of years since the day we first met, a day that really has changed my life - for the good - forever. The number of years I've been blessed enough to have you in my life. The number of years I've gotten to laugh at your jokes and smile when you smiled, because you can light up a whole room.

It's the number of years I've been in love with you, if I'm completely honest. In some ways I can't believe it's been nine years already; in others, it surprises me how little time that actually is. How can I have only known you for nine years when it feels like we've been friends for life?

I guess that's just how it is when you find your soulmate.

Lauren took a sharp intake of breath. That was the first time he'd referred to her as his soulmate. An involuntary smile spread across her face.

'I'm so lucky to have you as my soulmate' she texted him.

And she really did feel lucky. Some people spent their whole lives searching for their soulmate and still never found them. She'd been fortunate enough to meet hers in college, and it didn't take them too long to figure it out either. She was so glad that they hadn't wasted too much time.

'Not as lucky as me' was his response.

'Shut up and let me be nice back to you' she said.

'Okay, okay' he said.

'But I definitely love you the most' he texted just seconds later. She decided to pretend she hadn't seen that one.
