When the Demon army has aligned their strength: the House of Ambercroft must fall...

                                                                       Prologue:

1734

Avenmore Estate, England.

"Kyrian beat his fists on the ground again and again as he railed at the skies, No! NO! NOOOOO!"

Little Beatrice with her eyes wide and riveted on her father, gasped. Despite the fire crackling in the nursery hearth, she felt a chill crawl up her spine and something wet slide down her face.

Adrian paused in his tale and bent to lift his daughter from her bed and onto his lap as he asked, "Are you crying, sweetheart?"

Beatrice sniffed as her father produced a snowy white handkerchief and wiped her face, "Poor Kyrian."

Saying thus she turned in Adrian's arms to look at her mother sitting in the chair opposite her father holding Beatrice's six-year-old brother – also named Kyrian - as though to make sure he was alright.

Ava was touched to see the look of concern on her little darling's face but when she met her husband's gaze she gave him a pointed look as if to say: Did you have to tell your eight-year-old this story, now?

"Yes," Adrian returned Ava's look with one beseeching patience, "poor Kyrian."

Turning his daughter on his knee away from her where she continued to look at little Kyrian worriedly he continued, "But the story doesn't end there.

"Because Kyrian had felt as much agony as there is to feel without being torn apart. He swore that as long as he lived, no one would feel the pain he had felt. And no one would suffer at the hands of demons as Kyrian had suffered. No one would lose a loved one as Kyrian had lost his brother.

"It is a human's lot to suffer, Bea. But not everyone makes it their mission to keep others from suffering the same. It takes a special soul to put others before themselves. To take their share of the pain and make it their own. To do the right thing, no matter the consequences.

"And the power that put Kyrian on this earth was proud of his courage and wanted to help Kyrian in his mission against the demons."

"The Ambercroft promise!" Beatrice exclaimed, excited to share an important detail.

"Very good, Bea! That's exactly what I was getting to, the Ambercroft promise...

"The Ambercroft promise is a pact made to Kyrian and by Kyrian. Kyrian swore that he and his blood would fight the demons as long as they lived. And in return, all who stood with him in his cause were gifted with the abilities that allowed them to defeat the demons and send them back where they belong. The Ambercroft promise is the guard that keeps the demons at bay. Without it...?"

"The demons would rule the day," Beatrice answered grimly.

"But luckily," Adrian reassured her, "as long as Kyrian's blood lives?"

He held out his hand for Beatrice's tiny one. Lifting her chin, eight-year-old Beatrice raised her own hand and placed it confidently in his, "The Ambercroft promise will never be broken."

Adrian smiled at his daughter adoringly and kissed her forehead as he promised himself, "And the demons will never rule your way, my love."

"What did you say, papa?" Beatrice yawned as her father tucked her into bed. Just a few feet away, Ava lay little Kyrian in his crib and kissed each of his little fists before slipping them under the blankets.
