Chapter 6
Time: November 16, 2017
Friday.
"School just needs to end. Like, right now."
"I know, man! It's so close!"
At school, Aaron and Cade were shaking with excitement. They had gone through six classes, graded seven exams, and taken four. In just 5 minutes, they would be free from their scholarly captors.
Aaron commented, "Remember, we've got to get to those exosuits first!"
"I know, I know. I heard the expo started around 2:45, so the crowd already there has a 15-minute head start on us." Cade replied.
"We'll just have to gun it right when we leave school." Aaron remarked.
Cade looked around worriedly, "I think everyone else has the same idea."
Around them, the rest of the class was also buzzing with anticipation for the big expo. Everyone wanted to be there. After all, Mr. Silver's technology was changing the world. Who wouldn't want to see what he was up to next?
Erik sat quietly, not talking to anyone. He was spinning a top on his desk, bored.
Jasper turned around, noticing what he was doing. He knocked the top off of the table and commented, "Now would be a really bad time to get detention, huh?"
Erik ignored him, simply picking the top back up. This jerk had been bothering him all week. He had smacked his touchpad out of his hands, pushed him up against lockers, thrown his backpack in the trash. But the expo was today, and he couldn't be late. At this point, it was best just to ignore the evil sitting in front of him.
But Jasper wouldn't have it. He knocked over his own books onto the floor, making a large thud on the floor. Everyone turned around, facing the two classmates. The teacher looked up, saying, "Who did that? There are people downstairs and in the other room testing!"
Jasper pointed behind him, "The new kid knocked over my books."
The teacher looked over at Erik and replied, "Mr. Hessen, just because you aren't yet a full-fledged student at our school doesn't mean that you don't have to abide by the rules. Stop roughhousing and leave Jasper alone. Do you understand me?"
Erik faked a smile, gave the teacher a thumbs up, and kept reading on his touchpad.
But for a while, the teacher and the class were still staring at him. Erik looked up from his pad and asked, "Yes?"
The teacher hotly responded, "Pick up Jasper's books. You were the one who knocked them over. Honestly, your generation has no sense of respect."
Jasper looked over at Erik, smirking.
"Well? I'm waiting." he grinned from ear to ear.
Slowly, Erik picked up the books, placing them on Jasper's desk. Jasper was watching him, gleeful at his expense.
"Ta-da." Erik muttered.
"Thank you, Erik." the teacher said, then turned back to the board.
Jasper turned around and repeated, "Now would be a really bad time to get detention."
"What are you-"
This time, Jasper knocked over his own touchpad.
The thud echoed on the floor.
The teacher turned around.
Erik looked at Jasper, who simply smiled and asked, "Erik! Why'd you do that!?"
