Chapter 2

Time: June 2, 2014

From his office, Judas Silver could see the teenagers below. They were in a large room filled with white desks, and they were writing down answers on a test.

Their ages ranged from eleven to eighteen, and they were all excited to be starting their first day of Aptitude Testing. Some could barely contain themselves.

Judas noticed a girl looking up at him in his office. She looked around eleven, and had large braces in her mouth. He could tell because beaming from ear to ear.

"Mr. Silver, we are ready to begin." remarked his assistant, standing to his right.

Judas looked over at him, "You're sure?"

"We've prepped the knockout gas. We'll release it when you're ready."

Judas's eyes glanced back down at the girl. She was still smiling, radiant and happy.

He looked into her eyes, then turned to his assistant and said,

"Release it."

Time: August 4, 2014

Alarms rang throughout the testing facility as Judas Silver stumbled through the darkness. His suit was torn, and he had a desperate look on his face.

As he ran down the hallway, he tried to think of how it had all gone wrong. Had the virus produced any negative effects? Anything noticeable? Or was it all fate bringing his business empire to a close?

Another figure emerged from the smoke down the hallway.

"Who are you?" Judas demanded to know.

It was the lead genetics scientist, Dr. Turin. His pale face was nearly paralyzed with fear, and he had a large bruise on his forehead. He limped towards Silver, who had to catch him from falling.

"What happened, Turin? Was it a power overload, or did the virus have side effects?" Silver asked, propping his scientist against the wall.

Breathless, Turin tried to find the words to speak, "...It wasn't us...Mr. Silver. It wasn't our machines... or our scientists...it was the children."

"What do you mean? Did they try to escape?"

Turin shook his head no, and went on, "The testing.... was successful until earlier today, when we increased the amount of the virus strain in their bodies. They started... reacting to the virus more than we've ever seen before. It was as if.."

"Dr. Turin, explain. How did they react?"

Turin struggled to remain conscious. Confused and enraged, Judas shoved him against the wall, saying, "Doctor Turin, I need answers and I need to get out of here alive. Now tell me: How did they react to the virus?"

The door down the hallway burst open.

Judas turned, dropping the now-unconscious Doctor Turin.

A test subject, a boy, stood in the doorway. The smoke surrounding the doorway made him appear like a ghoul-like apparition.

He was shaking, and his face had an expression of contorted rage. His test jumpsuit was covered in embers. Slowly, he began to walk forward.

"You took me away from my family." The boy growled, and continued walking forward. His eyes were fierce, and his steps echoed with a dull thud on the steel floor.

Judas walked backwards steadily, making no sudden movements. His eyes searched the room around him, looking for an exit. But it was just him and the boy. He held his breath.
