Chapter 9

After Roland checked on Erik and Aaron, another long period of waiting went by. But, the medical door finally slid open. Syke walked out first, pushing Aaron in a stretcher.

"Are you alright?" Roland asked, eyes staying on the computer screens.

Aaron could barely manage a grunt at first, but croaked, "Not feeling so good."

"Going through the first stage of being a superhuman doesn't go well for everyone, but he pulled through." Syke responded, then had a seat next to her patient.

"Good. We'll need him. How did he respond to the sedatives?" Roland questioned.

With a concerned look in her eye, Syke replied, "At first, everything in the room started floating, but I got him to calm down. But Roland- he's pretty volatile. I should keep monitoring him. He pulled through this time, but..."

"I understand." Roland answered.

"I'm doing fine too, thanks for asking." a voice came from behind.

Everyone whirled around to see Erik Hessen standing in the back of the room, wearing a black and grey jumpsuit. The burned flesh on his body had been treated, and was slowly going back to its normal tanned color. His hair now looked more charcoal than dark brown, but the rest of his features were the same.

Roland replied, "Good to have you back, Erik. So," he nodded in Aaron and Jasper's direction, "these are the superhumans you were telling me about."

"That's right."

"Can I trust them?"

Aaron and Jasper looked at each other, confused.

Erik glanced at both with a raised eyebrow, then replied, "Aaron's completely new to this, so I'll give him a free pass. The other guy, though..."

Angered, Jasper sat up in his seat, "All right, I'm tired of this. I've been sitting here for the better half of an hour, and all you guys have done is stare at computer screens and talk about me like I'm not even here. So I'm gonna want some answers right about now!"

Cooper held out his baton, saying, "And all you've done is complain. Listen up, you little brat, we've got bigger priorities than-"

Roland interrupted, "No, Cooper. If we can trust them, we should give them an explanation."

Jasper smirked at Cooper, who, in response, unsheathed his baton again and brought his chair closer to him.

"Should we bring in Cade?" Erik asked, remembering that he was outside.

"Who?" Roland questioned.

"Aaron's friend. The guy standing outside." Erik explained.

Roland grimaced, then shook his head, "No. He's not coming in here."

Syke looked at Erik, then said, "Let's at least let him know that his friend is alive, Roland."

After a moment of thought, Roland replied, "Fine, go talk to him. I'll fill in the new guys."

Syke nodded with a smile, then left the room.

Roland turned to Aaron and Jasper, then said, "Let's get started."

He began, "About three to four years ago, Genesis Labs discovered a virus that could alter DNA. It basically gives the human body an enhancement, helps it to become stronger and faster. But the CEO must have realized that it only works on younger people. That's the only way that I can rationalize that only our age group has these powers. "
