Chapter 1
I woke up shivering from the hard surface I was laying on. My eyes were focusing on the black - blue sky with millions of crystal white stars. It doesn't make sense. I am trying to put the pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle, struggling to figure out how and why I'm here. Camping trip - friends - bomb?
I lift my head up to see my surroundings and all I see is broken tents, chairs, broken light stands, trees catching on fire and injured people lying everywhere. I try to get up but the pain in my legs brings me down.
I slowly counted in my head, "1, 2, 3" and get up, still feeling pain across my body. I rub my hands across my arms, trying to keep warm. As goosebumps covered my outstretched legs and arms, I wished I had listened to Mum nagging, "Cassidy you should bring a jumper because it can get cold at Alley way camping place." Damn it I thought.
I walk slowly as my legs felt like they are going to drop off. Dodging around peoples bodies, panic started to take control.
"Where are my friends and parents" I question. "Mum, Dad where are you?" I yelled. No answer. "Mum, Dad where are you?" I scream.
Still no answer.
My throat starts to ache but I kept walking, looking around to see if anyone I knew was up. I couldn't find anyone. Thoughts came across my mind, "What if I'm the only one alive? What am I going to do? How am I going to survive?" I tried to remember where my parents were before I left them. "That's right the lake!"
I couldn't fight the hopeless thoughts that began to overwhelm me.
I limp towards the lake, shocked and my heart pumping fast as I saw my parents lying across the dirt, scratches and covered in blood over their pale skin. I kneel down to shake their bodies.
"Mum, Dad wake up, please!" tears suddenly running down my face. "Please!"
My mind stopped working and it feels as if time is in slow motion. I looked around to see my neighbours, family, and friends exactly like my parents - pale, scratched, blood and covered in dirt. I kiss my Mum and Dad's cheek and found a grey, woollen blanket near a fallen tree and put it over my parents. Crying hard and erasing the horror I just saw, I walk away in despair.
