Rosa Wolfe, when Dean had met her for the first time, he had not imagined her like this.
He had expected a typical french maid that he saw in movies- not a crazy old woman.
She chuckled at his question. "Anything strange with this family? Everything was strange with this family."
"Like what?" he asked, trying to sound casual.
She leaned forward. "I had told you about Mr. Weld last time. Was it helpful? "
"Uh, yes," he said awkwardly.
She looked pleased with that. "Now I'll tell you about Mrs. Weld," she paused for a dramatic effect, then whispered, "She was cheating on her husband with Tristan Clinton," and then sat back.
Dean did his best to look surprised, "What! No way," he shook his head.
Rosa threw back her head and guffawed.
"Why didn't you tell me this the last time?"he asked.
"Well," she shrugged, " I don't like to say anything bad about dead people, but you insisted so much," she sighed.
Dean frowned. "I did not-"
"Anyways, I have told you what I know. My work's done." She made to go.
"What! Stop," he said going after her but she simply ignored him.
"Ma'am you cannot leave me like that!" A hint of anger arising in the words.
She stopped and turned. "Why not?"
It took him a good few seconds to figure it himself. "Because... because I'm a police officer!"
She laughed as she came back and sat down. "I haven't met a lot of police officers in my life," she said," but you must be the worst."
Shocked at her boldness, it took him some time to form his next words"and why is that?" he demanded.
"First, you came to my house alone, I could kill you and no one will know."
Dean opened his mouth to argue but closed it soon after. She was right.
"Second," she said," ' is anything strange with this family ' is not even a question. That stuff is in movies, when the character conveniently tells their part of the script."
He pursed his lips. "Ma'am can you just tell me what you know?" He asked.
"I know a lot of things. Like the capital of our country and the-"
Dean banged on the table. His unexpected aggression shocked him as much as it shocked her.
She recovered quickly, am amused expression on her face.
"What can you tell me about Tristan and Jane's relationship," he ironed out.
"Oh that," she laughed. "They had a strange one. Very passionate, equally hopeless. They had little rendezvous a few weeks ago," she said nonchalantly.
"Could you tell me in detail?"
She smiled as she remembered the incident that was the topic of her many gossips.
I walked as fast as my body would allow me, with a pile of laundry in my hand.
Suddenly a noise made me stop in front of a closed room. I put my ears on the door, trying to figure out what's going on.
She knew that Jane was inside, along with her boyfriend. It was strange he was here now, considering that Mr Weld was in town and they usually met at night.
"Jane!" he yelled,"you can't do this to me!"
She said something in reply, but Rosa couldn't hear it.
"Babe, I don't know what I did wrong but I'm sorry," he said softly," Whatever is wrong- we can fix it."
Soft sounds came from inside the room. Jane was crying.
"We should fix it," he murmured, barely audible to Rosa," whatever is bothering you- we should fix it. It would be better for everyone."
Her lack of response must have made him continue," I have got the tickets. You just need to bring those documents. Thomas is not returning before the day after, I've made sure of that. This is the chance. This is our chance."
"No. It's over for us Tristan. I'm not leaving Thomas. Go."
"I'm telling you Jane. You are making the wrong decision."
"Go!" She yelled.
Footsteps approached the door and Rosa hurried away.
Before the door slammed shut, there was an unmistakable sound of a vase breaking.
But Rosa knew that it was not the only thing that had broken that day.
