April 14, 2055 (9 years into the Omnic Crisis)

The Omnic crisis had been going on for nine years now. Nine of the ten years you've lived so far, wasted on watching the news for safety information, hiding away in the basement or attic, school lockdowns, etc. It's not normal for a ten year old to say they were use to such a routine, but you have become more than use to it since it had been going on almost since the day you were born. But today, today had crossed the line.
It had been a decent day for you, no attacks had been reported, no riots, nothing. At least not until you got home from school. Your mom was waiting and as usual, your father wasn't there yet. Ever since the crisis had begun, he picked up many overtime hours at work to try and support you and your mother as much as possible for if anything were to happen. On a normal day, he wouldn't come home for another hour, so you didn't worry.
Three hours passed and your mom had called your father over and over again, only for him not to answer. Currently you were sitting on the couch as your mom tried to call yet again. On the tv, a cooking show was playing. Normally the three of you (you and your parents) would normally watch it when it came on each night. Though, in the middle of the episode, it cut into a news announcement.
"We interrupt the scheduled program with this important news alert. In downtown Montreal, police have been informed of an attack. When arriving on the scene multiple were found dead or in need of hospitalization. At this time if you know any of these people, you are advised to head to the Montreal General Hospital immediately." As the news anchor spoke, pictures of multiple people were shown on screen, no names, but it said if they were hospitalized, or dead. At first you payed no attention to it until your mother walked into the room. They showed more and more images of people of whom you didn't recognize, until a picture of your father appeared. Underneath the picture read, 'Dead'.

February 6, 2068

You sat in a chair, at a metal table that was placed in a room, isolated from everything outside. No windows, only a light, the table, and the chair. At the moment no one was with you. A couple weeks ago, you had filled out an application to join the elite, global task force known as Overwatch. Even though the Omnic Crisis had already ended twelve years ago, everything still seemed fragile and you had fears of a new war beginning. And if a new war was never going to happen, there was still a huge threat uprising, a terrorist organization that went by the name Talon. You wanted to make your father proud, to help restore full peace to world.
The room was silent as you had been sitting alone for around thirty minutes. The silence broke when the door finally opened again, and in stepped the notorious Jack Morrison. You looked up at him as he walked over to the opposite side of the table, lying your files in front of him.
"We've read everything over, your application and such. Over the past couple weeks we have talked it over, and I think it's safe to say we could use an agent like you."
A smile grew across your face as you nodded, glancing down to the papers Jack was looking at, excited to hear any further news.
"Of course we can't just straight away put you on the front lines, so for a few months, maybe even up to a year or so, you'll stay here at the base. We have multiple training exercises and everything to set you up as soon as you are able to start. You will be provided a room, a rookie uniform, food, hygienic products, and all the necessary things you'll need. Here is a copy of all the information you'll need." Jack paused to slide over a small packet towards you, it looked to be maybe three pages. "On the last page is the number you'll need to call once your ready. We will have a driver pick you and carry up your luggage. They'll bring you here and we'll have an agent waiting to lead you to your room, introduce you to our medical staff, scientists, everyone you'll be most likely to interact with, and even give you a tour. Training will start the day after so you can have time to get acquainted with everyone and get comfortable before you start. You can also call the number if you have any questions, if you are unable to call there is an email address as well if that would be most convenient for you."
At first, you were speechless, smiling as you skimmed through the front page of the packet. "Mr. Morrison, thank you so much. It'll really be a great honor to work along side you all. And I'm glad you took this into consideration, I promise I won't let you down." You stood with a wide smile, shaking the agent's hand who stood before you.
"I assure you miss (L/n), the pleasure is all mine. We could always use more brave people like you to step up and help with such a cause. And please, call me Jack. I'm not your boss, not yet." He gave you an assuring smile as you shook his hand. Afterwards, you were led out of the room and out of the headquarters. You called a cab to drive you home. As soon as you stepped inside you read over every last word in the packet, making sure you understood what the papers said.
You placed the packet on the fridge, using a magnet, it would be the place where it would be hardest to loose. Afterwards, you wasted no time in calling your mom. She was the one who supported you most in this decision, though she was hesitant at first, worried greatly for your safety. In fact, it took you weeks to fully get her to agree.
The phone rang for a short time before your mom's voice appeared at the other end.
"Mom, remember how I told you about that meeting I had at Overwatch headquarters today?" It was hard, but you hid the excitement in your voice, you didn't want it to be too obvious what had happened.
"Yeah, you've been talking about it for months sweetheart, I couldn't forget if I tried. You did go didn't you?"
"Of course I went, they told me if I made the cut or not..."
"And? What'd they say?"
You stayed silent for a short second before you broke the news. Your mom was obviously happy for you, congratulating you and what not. Through the call you explained everything they said, and she went through her whole 'be safe' speech which you had heard a thousand times since you told her this is what you wanted to do.
The call was short as your mom had things she needed to do, as did you. You wanted to make sure everything would be ready for when the big day finally arrived. This would include quitting your current job as a waitress, making sure your medical insurance and such was up to date, even though Jack said that was already covered, and every thing else that needed to be taken care of.
