Never Sometimes Always – Chapter Three

What do you wear on a lunch date with Harry Styles?

This single question has been running through Violet's head for the past three hours. It's taking up all of the space in her brain. In fact, it's hindering her from studying. She's only made it through one section, the immune system, and she has ten more to go. She's only spoken to the boy on two occasions and he's already bad for her mental health and education. Great. Violet's phone buzzes on her desk and instead of staring into space like she had been doing, she checks it.

amb💕: elouisa has got to go. i'm losing my mind, vi.

Violet chuckles at the message. See, she originally had two roommates. Amber and Jenna. Amber was from Armadale, Northern Scotland and went to the University of Cambridge with Violet. Their other roommate, Jenna, is a college student from Stevenage. She's currently going to Cambridge Regional College. Violet is only a year her senior, so at first it took a lot of convencing to get her in a flat with Violet and Amber. It was surprising when the trios parents agreed. With Amber's parents living quite literally days away, and Violet's over two hours away, it brought ease to Violet and Amber's parents knowing that Jenna's parents were only forty minutes away from their flat. Amber hated the pop-up visits, being twenty-one and all, but it's only happened twice in the two years of them living there.

The three girls had a fourth room in the flat. Up until three months ago, it was storage. Then they met Elouisa. She was a quirky Cardiff girl who was looking for a place to stay close to the university. So naturally, Violet offered her the room. It made their insanely expensive monthly payment deplete by a little over a hundred pounds.

The problem with Elousia is that she is everything that Violet, Amber, and Jenna were avoiding in a roommate. They have unspoken roles in their home. Amber is the adult who handles the tenants notes and technically owns the flat, but she also loves to party and have the occasional guest over for the night. Violet and Jenna always get a heads-up so it's never shocked them.

Jenna is the teenager. She's eighteen, which is technically an adult, but she's still in college so Violet and Amber make sure to call her the baby of their little family. She honestly isn't there much. She goes to college, then word at Miss Selfridge, and then she comes back to sleep. And then there's Violet, of course. She kept to herself mostly, but when it came to the grocery shop or making sure everyone got their vaccines this year, she was on top of it. They had their own method of operation.

But boy, Elouisa was a wreck.

It's really simple to follow a written schedule. If person a, b, and c took the rubbish out each week in that order, person d should then do their week. If you used a saucepan or a glass, clean it when you're done. Don't leave your dirty laundry on the kitchen floor in front of the washer – keep it in your room until you can wash it. Simple. Well, not for Elouisa.
