Chapter 1
A young farm and housemaid came to the riverbed to gather water and found a deathly pale appearing woman. She had large eyes of unknown color, a delicate nose, and a gentle mouth. Her skin was a flawless creamy white other than the cuts and bruises that had formed there and she was thin, but an athletically thin. She was built for speed and tactic rather than for brute strength. Her chest moved with only the barest hint of breath. Cuts and bruises covered her body she was clearly a mess of beauty and pain. The deeply tanned farmhand gracelessly pulled the woman to a cave she had found some time to go and began to mix a potion to apply to the girl's wounds.
Luna began to open her eyes lazily as she thought she was in her own room reaching and stretching she felt sharp pains all over her body this caused her snapping her eyes open she remembered. The ceiling was dark and dew was gathered there. This most definitely wasn't her home.
"Would you stop I don't want to have to restitch you!" A voice penetrated the void of silence that had laid over the cave.
Luna felt her eyes drawn to the girl that sat over a small fire. The girl not much older than her had shoulder length brown hair that was cut in a boyish mop. Her skin was dark and tan from years of working outside. Her noticeably simple brown dress was dirty and old, Luna observed as she pulling herself against the wall. Luna noticed that the girl was thicker than most of the Fallen and had a sharp look in her eyes. She was notably intelligent and quick-witted.
In a rough and raspy voice Luna coughed out, "You saved me."
Alyssa smiled a thin smile saying, "It seems so." She turned to Luna for the first time holding a cup, "Here drink." Luna noticed now that she had a small button nose and a long scar that came down from her right eye. They were an earthy brown not unpleasant at all.
Luna being the careful Fallen she is she took and smelled the drink before taking a small sip. Relief spread through her throat almost instantly now in a much more normal voice she said, "Thank you."
The farmhand smiled mildly at her answering her with a sly look and saying, "You're welcome and my name is Alyssa."
Luna watched the girl her eyes a simple grey before saying, "I am called Luna and it appears I am in your debt," and trying to pronounce the name she pauses before continuing, "Alyssa."
With Luna's pronunciation of her name, it was enough to send Alyssa into giggles. This, of course, caused Luna to look at her questionably and sobering up Alyssa reached into the back of the cave pulling out a brown dress much like the one she wore.
When Luna took it in her hands eyed it with the distaste but at least it wasn't like the colorful garments that her people wore. Looking down at her once beautiful dress she saw it was in tatters and it was much like the color of the dress she held in her hands now because of the muddy river.
The fabric of the new dress was a cheap cotton and very plain but it was better than rags she supposed. Standing to put it on she felt pain every step of the way. Once putting on her new dress Luna painfully slid back down the wall until she was seated.
Alyssa raised her eyebrows as Luna let out a sigh relief. Alyssa then began to hand her a piece of bread and another small cup of water. Luna took them both fiercely begun stuffing the bread into her mouth. The other girl watched as Luna made a sound of approval as she did so.
Alyssa chuckled then asked, "Where are you from?"
Taking a drink from her water Luna answered wisely, "The shadows."
"The shadows?" questioned Alyssa.
"Yes, a place where creatures and others reign. A place where humans haven't yet reached. A place where freedom is actually free."
Alyssa, a human herself, was actually not offended for she had seen the cruelty of other humans, "Why'd you leave?"
"My friends and I were on a gathering trip to see if the human world has changed when we were ambushed. My friends, they were killed and I had to flee for my life. The humans were all cowardice and stayed in the trees shooting down at us!"
Alyssa looks at her new friend sadly, "I'm sorry for your loss. Men did the same to my village when I was a youth. They burned our house and slaughtered our men. They, then, took the children, women, and teens throwing them into cages. We were sold into slavery."
Luna looked up at the girl with tears in her large gray eyes, "How awful! These men must die! Bring them to me!" Leaping to her feet as if she were to end them right then and there. After her outburst, she painfully sat back down once again. Then said with a slight smile, "Maybe I will end them after I have recovered a bit."
Alyssa giggled behind her hand and said, "There's no way to kill anyway, I was sold to one master than another and so on now I am sold to an old man. He is very kind to us."
Luna gave her a disgusted look, "No one is ever owned. We all have rights! To his be his own and you alone you're own."
Alyssa patted the girl's head, "You much much to learn."
