Chapter 3
Alyssa could not help, but watch her friend carefully. She knew that one wrong move and everything would come to an end and it would be the end of everything she knew. Alyssa felt angry in all honesty at the girl but she was also relieved at the master's kindness. Gods why could she not she have just stayed in the cave! She had books, food, a fire, water, and everything else you could possibly need until Alyssa got back.
Alyssa found herself scowling and knew that one of the Masters only rules was always smiling while serving guests. If she got caught on this particular night the consequences would be harsh. Put on a fake smile on her face the normally preppy girl talk to herself through the night always watching Luna and half expecting them to drag her off to the dungeon at any moment.
If Luna could say one thing about the human world is that they knew how to ignore a problem and hope it would go away. As that was what everyone was doing to her. She was being outcasted by the outcasts. The people that you had to invite, but no one really wanted there and now, she was one of them. She was a princess, a warrior princess, yes, but a princess nonetheless. They were treating her like crazy aunt that no one wanted or asked to come. The one that just showed up. She was an outsider to outsiders that's for sure and she did not like it one bit.
As was her way she kept her head up high and proud. No one in the dining hall would meet her eyes although they would give her a long side stare, every time she would meet their eyes they would look away quickly all too quickly to be polite, then again they weren't trying to be polite.
Thankfully the dinner ended quickly and soon everyone was on their way. This was when the master pulled her to the side waiting for the guests, wanted and unwanted, to leave. Many lingered trying to catch a just a slip of gossip, but within the time they had all left and now the maids were cleaning up in the dining hall. He brought her to his office and taking a seat he watched her. A fire burns brightly in the fireplace. The place itself was comfy enough from the chairs to the atmosphere itself. Off to the side of the fire and chairs was a desk, of course, the walls covered with bookshelves that lined the entire room. It was a quiet comfy room if Luna did say so herself. It actually reminded her of her father's own office.
Taking a seat she noticed that the chairs were filled to the brim with pillows making her feel that as if her whole back had sunk in an entire inch. The old man was studying her she could feel the heat of his gaze as the tension in the room was beginning to build up. She felt her in anxiety levels rise with it.
Just when fight or flight was about to kick in the tired old man said any raspy voice, "A whale?"
Luna met the man's tired eyes with her own bright youthful ones, "Oh yes I would love to see whales!"
The man hummed to himself in thought and this was when Alyssa began to listen to them through the door quietly. After a few moments, the man continued, "That's a first I suppose. Now, I'm Master James and who might you be, young intruder?"
The girl of the Fallen looked up at the man now known as master James and said, "I am Luna of the Shadows."
He chuckled, a deep sound, and asked kindly, "A shadow you say?" Again he looked at her deeply in thought again before saying "You aren't the first I've met in my time in this world, but you don't look like the rest of your people."
Luna felt happiness build inside her and she said in a rushed and happy tone, "You know my people! You must know how I can get home!"
The old master deeply into the blazing fire that burned in front of them, "Yes, I know of your people when I was just a boy when the worlds were one or at least your kind came and went as they please. I am old now and don't remember it all, but I know the times when you're people would see to our curses and when you daring people would dance in and out of the shadows from one land to the next."
He trailed off so lost in thought and memory to continue. He had a small almost sad smile on his face. Luna sat on the edge of her seat. She loved the stories of the old and now, could almost feel the the dance he spoke about in her veins.
Pulling himself from his thought he continues, "One of the shadow children, not much older than myself the time, snuck me into your land. I still remember it like it happened a day ago, not some 60 years ago, the colors were bright and vibe. The boy made a call into the wild wind and a scaly head appeared out of nowhere standing to its full height it was the most massive being I have ever seen. Two large wings sprung from her back and she was breathtaking. A livid green her scale shown at the time I never learned the boy's name nor that of the dragons, but we mounted the great dragon's back and we took off. While flying I have never in my life felt so free and had so much joy."
The man got to his feet and leading her to a room its walls were covered in maps and lines lead from place to place. Luna couldn't stop herself from asking, "What is all this?"
The old man turned to her excitement in his eye, "All the places I have found that unexpected things and almost magical have happened over the years! I have kept track of them all! I've always hope one of your race would come along so you could take me back to see the dragons!"
Luna want to look at him slightly shocked and ask,"But why?"
James sat down now the energy left his bones before continuing, "Your homeland was the only place I've ever lived and felt the most joy. I know that it's the only place I want to live my final moments in a world full of wonder. My time is almost up, but I have the money, the maps to get in the land, and the supplies you will need to get you and your friend back. The only thing is you have to take me with you."
Alyssa almost fell through the door after hearing that and Luna felt her eyes darted to the door sensing in the small movement.
James chuckled and said, You can come out now, Alyssa."
This caused Alyssa to get up and walk through the door her head bowed in shame. The old man smiled at them and asked, "So do we have a deal?"
