Chapter 2
Luna had been healing remarkable fast it had been only a little less than a week since her crash and she was almost as good as new. Now, the girl was being to cause Alyssa all kinds of heck by wandering outside of the cave and exploring the area. She would bring all kinds of things back! Hoping to keep her in the cave and out of the eye of the guards she brought her books to read from the Master's library.
Now, she was bringing Luna food and she could only hope and pray that she was still in the cave when she got there. Alyssa's master was having a party tonight so the guards had doubled and if Luna came out of the cave there was a good chance she was going to get caught which would cause them both to be sent to the hanging post. She found the girl with books spread around her and a thinking face on. Luna looked up at her with bright eyes when she came in and asked, "Have you ever seen a whale?"
Alyssa looked at her with pure confusion written across her face, "A whale?"
Luna nodded excitedly, "A whale! A giant ocean creature that's as big as a house!"
"No, why?" Alyssa asked handing her the food cautiously.
"Oh, we must go see on!" Luna shrieked like a young child and took the food that was handed to her.
"We don't have an ocean near here and I don't have the time I have to get back to the kitchen the Master is having a dinner party tonight!"
Luna looked down sadly, her only friend was leaving her and wouldn't help her find a whale. Well, I'm not going to let her have all the fun. I'll go find a whale myself, she could help herself, but think.
Alyssa shook her head to clear the bad feelings that were placed there before heading back to work in the kitchen.
Luna felt adrenaline pump through her veins as she gathered supplies for her trip to go find a whale. Stepping outside the musky scent of smoke filled her nose before the smells of nature made their way there. She began to move silently from shadow to shadow as she had been trained to do with movements as if she was hunting she moved swiftly and confidently a brightness from the dark places.
Following a trail, she came to a large and frightening looking gate and with a steeling gaze she mumbled to herself, "Maybe, they have a whale here."
With her slim figure she easily slipped through the bars, but unknown to her she was being watched and it would be her undoing. They began to follow her step by step, a silent whisper in the wind, the danger of the dark, the person who would try and end the princess of the shadows freedom. And maybe, just maybe, they were more apart of the shadows than even she was as haunting as it might seem.
Shadows licked Luna's skin something that she was used to from when she was at home. If the only she knew that was something like that doesn't happen in this world she has found herself in.
Alyss moved quickly around the kitchen, then to the dining room to keep the guests happy. Now, she was gathering the second course for them and just as she about went back into the dining room she was a shadow out of the corner of her eye. In was a flash of black with blue mixed in and now, she could only hope it was one of the lady's gowns. In her heart, she knew in her very soul that it was Luna. Getting back to her job that evening the thought still haunted her mind.
Three burly guards pulled a pale girl to the front of the room and Alyssa almost dropped her dishes it was Luna! Why couldn't that girl have just stayed in the cave? Dragging her forward the guards called, "Intruder!"
Alyssa was shaking in fear at this point thoughts moved through her head as fast as a river. The old master hobbled to his feet looking up at the girl and in a voice that showed his age, "Why are you here, girl."
Luna being a proud and slightly fearless creature said in return, "I'm looking for a whale!"
The old man's bushy eyebrows rose into his saggy mess of hair and he asked, "A whale?"
Luna's eyes awoke with joy and she continued, "Oh, yes a whale! They're giant ocean creatures! I have read that they can be as big as a house and I have never seen one so I'm looking for one!"
The lady's snickered behind their hands looking at the girl as if she was a lunatic and the girl's certainty of finding a whale even sent the master into a fit of laughter. Everyone in the dining hall could clearly see that the girl was confused, but they didn't understand that her people plainly stated their thoughts and laughing would be viewed as quite offensive.
"What's so funny?" Luna spat at the others in the room anger from being laughed at.
This caused the old nobleman to sober up his laughter and look at the foolish youngling. He was a kind man, yes, but not one that you spoke to without respect. He looked at the strange girl and saw her for what she was. He did something that very few other nobles would do he forgave her and with a voice that shook the room, he said, "There are no whales here. Now, guards unhand her and get her a plate."
The guards dropped her and the dinners watched with curiosity. The pulled the girl into a seat at one of the far away tables. Giving her a plate of food they eyed her with distaste before moving back to their posts. Luna picked at her food it didn't taste anything like her peoples. The Fallen's food was rich in spices and taste and she found the humans to be dull and bland. She couldn't help herself, but miss her people's food so much. At home, the fruit was ripe with juices dripping and bread was warm and fresh. Here it was not.
At some point, a server came and gave her a glass of wine. Tasting the bitter drink she found herself frowning. Sadness seemed to be the only feeling that she could seem to be able to feel in this world. The only time she even felt remotely happy was when she was with Alyssa or when she was reading about the whales. Maybe this world wasn't made for her.
