“Are you sure, Cameron? I can give you another student to show around. I think I got this one!” Her voice was highly defensive, and she flashed me a look of possessiveness. Which almost made me laugh, because Cameron wasn’t even the slightest bit interested. That was made obvious every time he took a discrete step backward whenever she took one closer to him.

“I’m sure,” he said with a nod and a smile. Ignoring her brief moment of outrage, he maneuvered past her and made his way toward me in a perfectly relaxed manner.  “So, Paige, huh? What are you in for?” he asked, acting as though we were stuck in a cell and not attending one of the best schools in the country.

We traveled back toward the doors, and I couldn’t help but notice the heated glower that Sabrina sent my way. Not that it was hard to miss or anything, she didn’t even try to hide it when I made full eye contact with her. Not wanting to seem like a complete and utter whimp, I jutted my chin out and proudly walked next to Cameron, who was happily chattering away, oblivious to my predicament.

When we were back outside, I decided to answer his initial question. “Well, I’m a dancer. They gave me a full scholarship after they saw one of the pieces I performed.”

He released a low and long whistle. “Wow, full scholarship? You must be pretty talented,” he said as we meandered through the decorative rose garden that was around the school.

I opened mouth to shoot back some hopefully witty response, but that plan was foiled when Cameron broke free from his stance and sprinted toward a tiny girl that was desperately trying to drag out her suitcases. She was waved off by the same people who took away my luggage, and instead she was scooped up from her place on the ground and was squeezed tightly by Cameron.

I hesitantly followed his pathway toward them, not wanting to be intrusive, but also not wanting to be left completely alone in the rose garden. Once I was in a close enough range to hear them, I heard Cameron in the middle of excitedly greeting this newcomer.

“I’ve missed you so much, Rachel!” he said, not loosening his grasp around her waist. Her legs were flailing about, and her arms were tight by her sides.

“I’ve missed you too, Cameron. Get off,” she said, attempting to kick him in the shin. For the most part, it didn’t work because her legs were way too short to reach his.

He unceremoniously plopped her back on the ground, her combat boots crunching against the cobblestone. She released a frustrated huff and pushed her poofy ebony curls hair back. Finally, she noticed me awkwardly looming behind Cameron. I raised my hand up in a tentative and careful wave.

“Hi, who’s this?” she asked Cameron.

He had to spin around to see who Rachel was talking about, and when he realized it was me, he smiled brightly and turned back to Rachel. “This is Paige. She’s a dancer,” he explained happily. Cameron was obviously the type of person who was very social.

“Dancer, huh? Is it ballet that you do?”

I nodded shyly. It was weird that a miniature 4’10” girl could intimidate me way more than Sabrina ever could. “Yeah, how did you know?”
