The Month of August

I couldn’t think of anything worse than waking up late on your first day of the very prestigious school that barely accepted you. And low and behold, that was exactly what happened to me. One reason was because I could sleep like an old sloth, and the other was that I couldn’t find it in me to pick myself off my bed without killing at least one person.

I was sure that I only pressed the snooze button twice, three times at the most, but apparently, it had been pressed a grand total of six times. The sad thing was that the only reason I was even aware of this was because Jessica had to fling my blankets off my bed and threaten to dump a bucket of cold water over me. And even then, the pace I was going out was “intoxicated zombie” at best.

Adrianna had apparently already left an hour ago, because she was forced to wake up extra early to meet with Sabrina. If I had my wits about me, I probably would have felt sorry for her. But really, the only thing I could coherently ponder were the two words: “more sleep”.

Jessica had woken up early as well to treat herself to a nice breakfast in the school’s library cafe, and she claimed that she invited me before she left, but all she got as an answer was a weird gurgle of “leave me alone”. Which wasn’t hard to believe or anything, what was really surprising was the fact that I couldn’t seem to remember how to tie my shoes anymore. Anyway, Jessica had returned from her breakfast trip, and was horrified to find me still slumbering away like Sleeping not so Beauty.

And that was why I was stumbling around my dorm room with my eyes barely opened, trying desperately to find the scattered whereabouts of my school uniform. I had this morning all planned out the night before: I was going to wake up early, make myself a nice breakfast in the little kitchen, have my uniform laid out to me on the bed, and have an easy peasy day with no hitch whatsoever. Clearly, that fantasy was so far out of my reach that it was laughable.

“Just go to the bathroom!” Jessica said after silently watching me fumble around the room like a blind flamingo for a few seconds. “I’ll find your stupid uniform, just go get washed up. You have ten minutes, and counting,” she said, setting the timer on her phone. Once the numbers on her phone screen started to diminish, we both sprinted away in opposite directions, like it was an olympic sport and we were both in it to win it.

The cold shower immediately woke me up, and when I was done shivering to near death, I quickly dried myself off and shimmied into my undergarments. Once that was done, I pulled my undershirt over my head. While I was in the middle of violently brushing my teeth, there was a sharp knock on the bathroom door.

“Jessica?” I asked, my voice sounding gargled because of the foamy toothpaste.

“I found your skirt, blazer, and your socks. Your shoes and tie are by the bed,” she said.

I spit out the rest of the paste and yanked open the door . She seemed frightened for half a second before I quickly slammed the door back closed, my clothes crumpled up in my hand. Not that I could blame her for seeming terrified; she was just forced to witness my half-brushed hair, naked face, and splotchy skin. I couldn’t think of any worse way to start off your day.

I squirmed into my navy blue skirt, the fabric feeling like rubber as it struggled to move up my slightly moist thighs. When that was done, I wrestled into my blazer that went over my white collared shirt that I already had on. Ignoring my clearly unshaven legs (because shaving my legs was supposed to be another thing I did on my relaxing morning), I smoothed down my skirt and brushed at my wild hair, trying to make myself seem somewhat presentable and that I hadn’t just woken up two seconds ago. Maybe a solid ten.
