Faraway Memories

I kick up some dirt, just as I always did

When I was young. I remember so clearly, so vividly

How you would chuckle at the tiny brown specks that

Landed on your jeans. Your deep, rumbling chuckle that

Filled the darkest days with sunshine.

I remember how, when I was down, you would

Lift me up by the waist, swinging me in circles.

"Everything will be okay, princess," you'd whisper.

I believed it with all my heart, just because you said it. For

You were like a father to me, and your words mattered so.

I wonder if you know that, till now,

You hold an important place in my heart? Did you know that

A single word of your praise could make my day; and

The lightest criticism from you could make me

Cry for days? That I remembered your every suggestion,

Every comment? Did you know?

How I pray, so fervently,

I could return to the good old days. When

I was still a giggling child, bubbling

With joy and excitement.

How I wish, so very desperately, that

These weren't faraway memories

Trapped forever in the past.
