Do you recall, how we stayed up all night?
How we laughed and joked, never tiring
Until the first rays of sunshine shone through?
How our roommates during that overnight camp
Begged us to let them sleep in peace?
How our teachers asked us why
We had dark circles beneath our bloodshot eyes?
Do you recall, how we had no secrets? There wasn't a
Single thing that I kept from you. I poured out my
Heart to you, and just like a sister, you
Listened patiently. You were always honest,
Always telling me the hard truth when
It was warranted.
Do you recall, how you used to say
We'd be best friends till the end of time?
Only now do I realize how absurd a promise you made, and
How naïve I was to believe it. I didn't see how
Time could change everything, how a few people
Could pull us apart.
Do you recall, how you told me without a doubt
You would like me for who I am?
Only now do I see how boring I am, and
How fun and lively your new friends must be.
You never say it, never tell me you've
Grown tired of my company. But do you know
Unspoken words are far louder than spoken ones?
Perhaps, you and I are destined to
Have the same fate as the midnight chatter
That was ended by a single ray of sunshine.
A single ray of sunshine that shone so bright, it
Stopped the midnight chatter, broke the promises,
Ended the friendship.
