I am currently on my bed reading for my CHEM 101 exams when my phone starts ringing. It’s a strange number so I wait a little before answering the call and placing it in my ear.

“Hello?”

“Hi. It’s Timini, the guy you met about two weeks ago at the stadium.”

“Oh! Timini. How are you?” I ask, slightly perplexed that he is calling. After a few days of hoping that he will call without success, I got tired and lost hope.

“I am doing well, you?”

“I am okay. I am just trying to read for my CHEM exam that’s on Monday.”

“You are not yet done with your exams?” He enquires.

“Not yet. It is still remaining CHEM 101 and MATHS 111. You know they are computer based, that’s the reason it’s taking a lot of time” I explain.

“Yes, I understand but all that matters is that you are going to finish first semester exams soon”

“I am so happy. I can’t imagine that soon, I am going to be in second year. It’s just too fast to comprehend.” I tell him, cheerfully.

“I understand the feeling. It feels like it is just yesterday I got admission and now I am in 300level. Sometimes, I find it hard to even believe it.”

I chuckle, “You just have to believe it because it’s real”

“Yes, it is. Meanwhile, how are you going to find time to visit your family at home?”

“What do you mean?” I ask, completely confused as to where he is heading.

“You haven’t heard?”

“Heard what?”

“That the vice chancellor said that second semester starts a week after first semester exams end.” He informs me.

“Oh! I know about it.”

“So, are you going to go home for that one week?”

“No, I am not going. I will stay in school till the end of next semester.” I tell him.

“Wow! Aren’t you missing them?” he sounds baffled.

I laugh hilariously at that.
“I won’t even miss them even after four years” I say in a whisper.

“What did you say?” He asks. I am extremely happy he wasn’t able to pick what I said if not, I would have had a lot of explaining to do.

“Nothing important” I say.

“Well, if I was you and my family was far away, I would probably be going home every two weeks to see them” I can hear adoration in his voice as he talks about his family and it makes me happy even though it’s not my family.

I don’t really see why I should be happy going. The only person I am missing in Abuja is Chuks. Apart from Chuks, I wouldn’t ever want to go home. Nonso is in UNIZIK and he came to visit me last week. He stayed with Ifeanyi during his two-day stay in his lodge so I go there to spend time with him.

“I am happy you love your family that much” I tell him.

“Who doesn’t love their family?” He asks rhetorically.

You have no clue. My subconscious adds.

“So, I was wondering if we could see again.” He sounds so unsure and nervous.

“Sure, when?” I ask.

“Now” he says.

“Like right now?” I ask, feeling insecure. I haven’t even had time to apply styling gel on my Bantu nuts.
