Demons don't have wings anymore nor do they have horns. They come in form of the best thing that could ever happen to you.
Today is Monday which means by the end of this week, I would be out of secondary school. I am really happy that soon I will be in the university and gain my freedom. It just seems farther everyday even though it’s just Friday.
I still don’t have a graduation gown and my graduation party is on Saturday. I guess my dad wasn’t joking when he said he wasn’t going to buy me a gown. The gown is the cause of all these problems I have been facing for the past few weeks now. If I hadn’t confronted my dad when he said he wasn’t going to buy the gown, he wouldn’t have hit me and it wouldn’t have escalated to this point. Now, they look for any small opportunity they can use to beat me. Yesterday, my mom slapped me just for putting my shoes in the left side of the shoe rack instead of the right side. My dad seized my phone so I can’t even read my pains away. Every day in that house is becoming more and more torturous. I don’t even know if I would survive to stay in the house till UNN offers me admission. I just pray it doesn’t delay. I know that Nonso promised that he will be there for me but he can’t be always by my side. He is a human being and there are things he does on a daily basis so he can’t probably leave everything just so he can be watching out for me.
I see Kosi coming towards me with his famous one-sided dimpled smile. His two dimples only pops out when he grins widely.
“Harida, what’s up” He says when he gets to me.
“I am awesome. How are you?” I say.
“I am unquestionably handsome as usual” He says with a smirk on his face.
“You are so cocky” I say.
He shrugs his shoulders, “It’s not my fault that I have this masterpiece as a face”
Laughing, I say “Masterpiece my foot”
He chuckles, “I am fine. How was Further Mathematics?”
“It was great. The questions were so voluminous and there was limited time but by God’s grace, I knew everything so I was able to finish in time.”
“You are so intelligent. See how you are talking about it like you just wrote an easy subject. I asked some people before coming here how the exam was and their reply was the exact opposite of yours. They were all frowning; someone even said that she is sure that she is going to fail it. I know mathematics but Further Mathematics is just too much for my brain.” He says.
“Further Mathematics is almost the same thing with Mathematics. If you are really good at physics and Mathematics, then it wouldn’t be a problem and those are my three favorite subjects.”
“I am already an average at Mathematics so I really have no hope in Further Mathematics.”
I giggle.
“So, are you going home now?” Kosi asks.
“No. 2:00 buses have already gone so I have to wait till 4:00 before I can go. What are you even doing in school?”
“Well, my dad went to work so I had no one to talk to and everywhere was boring so I decided to come to school instead.” He says.
“Oh, I forgot it’s just you and your dad” I say.
“Yes. Since we are both not doing anything, let’s go to the field. We can talk and waste time there”
“Okay”
We walk side by side to the field. When we get there, we go to our usual bench at the corner and sit down.
I look up to see that the clouds are getting darker like it’s going to rain. The rain has been getting worse since last week. It has been raining every evening since then. I just pray that it won’t start till I get home.
