Meanwhile, the healers were on their way to The Cave of Souls when Fingo heard the sound like thunder rose up. He halted where he stood and allowed Shuriken to bustle forward.
Eventually, the she-wolf halted and glanced over her shoulder. "Fingo, what's wrong," she questioned.
A howl echoed through the forest and it caused the fur on Fingo's back to stand on end. Something about this just didn't seem right. "Something's wrong," he announced.
Dulphin had stopped as well. He turned his head reluctantly and rolled his eyes. "Come on. We can't just stop. We're almost there," he protested with his tail tip twitching.
"I have to. There's something wrong," Fingo announced. With no other warning, Fingo pelted forward and headed back through his came.
He pelted through the forest quicker than he had ever done in his life. His fur spiked along his back as he headed through the forest on the paths that had been distinct enough for him to follow. The moonlight lit his way and disguised his gray fur.
Fingo skidded to a stop when he heard the sound of painful whimpers and yelps as he glanced around, his ears shoved forward on top of his head. He saw the humans from before as well as his packmates laying dead in the clearing.
"No!"
Fingo barely registered that he had screeched anything as Shuriken came beside him. Her eyes rounded as she saw the fight. "We have to help them," she announced.
"Shuriken, no," Fingo wailed as his mate darted into action. She pushed her way through the entrance without even hesitating. Fingo reluctantly followed just as he heard the familiar howl of a horrid creature.
He turned his head and saw the Howler facing off against a human. When he opened his mouth, blood seeped from his teeth as his tail lashed against the ground as rage showed in his gaze. For once, Fingo was more than pleased to see this creature actually defending the pack and not trying to kill it.
Shuriken speared into battle, right for a human's leg. The human pointed it's thunderbranch at her and with a horrid sound, she fell to the ground. Blood oozed from her chest as he body crumpled, suddenly laying completely still with her eyes open and mouth parted so that a trail of blood ran from her mouth.
"Shuriken!" Fingo pelted over to her and stood over his mate. He turned her on her side and thrust his paws over her chest. Blood bubbled from his paws as he desperately tried to stop it. "It's alright. It's okay. I'll stop it. I promise. Don't die on me!"
Her head lolled weakly to the side as her eyes rolled back in her head. A hollow feeling surged through Fingo as he reluctantly drew backwards. He wasn't sure exactly how to feel. Right now, all he felt was numb.
His head turned and he met the gaze of another human. He just stood there, unable to move. He didn't even want to move. If they had taken his mate from him, then he wanted to go with her. He had no pack and no family. There was nothing more to live for.
The human placed something in the thunderbranch and pointed it at Fingo. Fingo felt a small burn, but it wasn't overwhelming. He growled as he turned and sunk his teeth into something attached to his shoulder. He spat it on the ground just as dizziness seemed to take over him. He swayed when he walked and exhaustion washed over him. He took one more step before he crashed down next to his mate.
His mouth moved, but no words came out. His eyes grew heavy as he watched his brother fall as well. Fingo willed himself to call him, but he couldn't. He took in a painful breath before everything went black.
