A year later
Fanggo bounded through camp with a rabbit hanging in his jaws. His dark gray pelt shone in the light of the sun and his heart lifted. It had been a hard cold season and he was lucky to find a rabbit hiding in the undergrowth. He knew that his brother, Fingo, would appreciate any prey. Illness had wiped through the camp and had taken numerous wolves' lives. Fingo certainly had his paws full.
He strode to the entrance and looked inside. "Fingo," he mumbled through the rabbit's thick fur.
Fingo muttered as he came over and looked at his brother. "You can't come in here. I have sick patients."
Fanggo snorted. "Do you really think I care about some sick wolves. Besides, I've never been sick before," he pointed out as he fluffed out his fur.
Fingo shrunk a bit since he was already smaller than his brother. "Yes, but I don't need you to start again. Now please leave," he pleaded.
Fanggo thought for a heartbeat before shaking his head. "No thanks." He bunched his muscles and leaped over his brother, landing inside the den. He trotted forward with the rabbit in his jaws.
"Fanggo," snarled Fingo as his fur rippled along his spine in anger. However, there was no stopping his brother when he had his mind set on something.
Fanggo dropped the rabbit before he heard harsh coughing coming from a small pup. He turned his head and saw a dark brown pup with milky blue eyes. He coughed again and discharge dripped from his nose.
Fingo pushed past his brother harshly and nudged a leaf toward the pup. "You have to eat this, Jolt," muttered Fingo as he pushed the leaf ever so closer.
Jolt made a face and looked away. "Uh uh."
Fingo sat back and looked to his brother. "You're here. You might as well try and help me with this stubborn pup," he barked almost hopefully.
Fanggo had no problem working with pups but his brother had always gotten nervous when he was around them. Mirago had always acted like Fanggo was about to explode any moment and he wasn't sure why. Nothing had ever happened.
"Come on," breathed Fanggo as he looked at the pup. "When you're a Fang like me you'll have to eat a lot of herbs when traveling. You want to be a Fang, don't you?"
The pup looked up and coughed. "Yeah," he rasped weakly before he lowered his head and began to nibble at the leaf, swallowing it almost whole.
Fingo sighed thankfully. "So young, so innocent, so weak! His littermates all died and only the runt it left. It has left Mildew devastated."
Fanggo could only imagine what it was like to lose a pup. He pushed forward and licked his brother's ear. "It wasn't your fault," he assured.
Fingo turned away. "You don't know that! I should have been a better healer, like Maaf."
"Maaf would be proud of the healer that you are," Fanggo barked as he remembered the patient, old, male wolf that had taught his brother everything.
Fingo sighed and growled a bit. "I'm just glad that you're still here. If something happened to you I don't know what I'd do."
Fanggo and Fingo were closer than most brothers usually were. Mirago was pleased yet surprised. They did everything together and they were always looking out for each other.
Fingo then almost leaped upward. "Herbs! Would you mind bringing some herbs to Chonce in the elder's den? I completely forgot!"
Fanggo snorted in amusement before he nodded. "Of course. Just give me what I need to give him so I don't mess it up." He didn't know herbs nearly as well as his brother and he wasn't about to pretend that he did.
