She was pretty much the only girl around. The only other one was a Fourth Year she recognized as Helen Swoden. She had beautiful long blonde hair, intense blue eyes and a very fair tone to her skin. She was nice as well, because while the 20 people sat around in the Quidditch Pitch, waiting for the Captain to arrive, she was the only one who decided to talk to Iris.
"You tried last year, didn't you?" Helen asked, as the both of them leaned against a railing.
"I did." Iris nodded. "For Seeker."
"I remember you. Flaming red hair flying around as fast as the wind. Hard to forget. You're good; very skilled flyer you are."
"Thanks." She smiled gently, looking down, quite embarrassed. "What about you?"
"Oh, I've tried last year as well, for Chaser. Didn't make it in either."
"That's just 'cause Yanley was way too thick to realize how good you are." A different voice chirped in the middle of the conversation.
Iris watched, quite amused, as a very tall and quite board boy walked over to them. Helen rolled her eyes, but she couldn't quite hide her smile. The boy threw one of his tanned arms over her shoulders and laughed as she, quite unsuccessfully, tried to push him away. It wasn't that Helen was small. Actually, she was quite tall as well – probably around 5'4" – but the boy was taller by at least two inches.
"Right... Whatever you say." Helen giggled.
"It's true, Ellie. You're great." He insisted.
"Alright, I believe you. Now I just need the bloody captain to believe in you, too."
The boy laughed, throwing his head back. Iris smiled gently, but shuffled uncomfortably, thinking she was intruding something. Noticing the girl's shyness, Helen decided to act.
"How impolite of me, not even introducing you..." She said, shaking her head. "So, Iris... That's Daniel Summers, he's in my year. Dan, that's Iris Evans, Third Year."
"Nice to meet you." Daniel smiled, extending his hand toward her.
"You too." She said, going for a shake of hands, but instead, as soon as her finger tips touched his, Daniel raised her hand to her lips and placed a quick kiss there.
Iris blushed a bit, averting her gaze from his intense brown eyes. Helen huffed, clearly annoyed.
"Oh, for the love of God, Dan... You're scaring the girl." She said and Daniel laughed.
"Sorry, it wasn't my intention." He winked at her.
"It's fine." Iris mumbled as Helen shook her head.
"Don't worry, Iris. He's always like that. Charming, isn't it?" The girl said, as she pushed Daniel slightly. He returned the playful gesture.
"Jealous, Ellie?" He smirked at her.
"In your dreams." She spat at him and Iris giggled.
Just as Helen was about to say something else, the Captain of the team, Anthony Lucas, a Sixth Year, arrived to the Pitch and called everyone to the center, so the try-outs could begin. Iris took a deep breath. She was going to make it in. That was her year.
And with that thought – that Dorcas forced into her mind during the last few days – Iris walked forward, so she could show what she could do. And she hoped it was enough.
